(Minghui.org) Ms. Zhang Shufeng, 70, from Deyang City, Sichuan Province, who was out on bail was taken back into custody on November 23, 2023 to serve a three-year-and-eight-month prison term for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Zhang was sentenced because on June 27, 2022, she talked to a person about Falun Gong on the street. Having recovered from her numerous illnesses, including frozen shoulder, neuralgia, rhinitis, bloody stools, and frequent colds and fevers, through practicing Falun Gong, she felt compelled to let people know that the practice was nothing like what was depicted by the communist regime’s hate propaganda. That person, however, took a photo of her and sent it to the Xiaogan Police Station.
The police station dispatched about five officers to raid Ms. Zhang’s home after 4 p.m. the next day. They confiscated all her Falun Gong books and informational materials, before taking her to the police station. They released her on bail after 10 p.m. and warned her not to talk to people about Falun Gong anymore or she’d be thrown into jail. Out of fear, her family did not allow her to get in touch with anyone else.
The Shengyang District Court summoned Ms. Zhang about one year later and tried her on June 19, 2023. Her lawyer said there was insufficient evidence to charge her, and she was allowed to go home after the hearing.
The police seized Ms. Zhang on November 23, 2023 and her loved ones learned weeks later that she was sentenced to three years and eight months. The exact date of her sentencing remains unknown. She is likely still held in the Deyang City Detention Center at the time of this report.
