(Minghui.org) A 49-year-old woman arrested more than two years ago was not allowed a family visit until two days before she was transferred to prison to serve a three-year term on December 4, 2023.
Ms. Jin Yijun, a resident of Lanzhou City, Gansu Province, was arrested on September 24, 2021, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999. She was held at the Qilihe District Lockup for seven days before being transferred to the Lanzhou City No. 1 Detention Center on October 2, 2021.
Ms. Jin was brutally tortured at the detention center and still recovering from her injuries when she was made to stand trial on April 7, 2023. As soon as she was brought into the courtroom, she collapsed into a chair and remained exhausted and weak throughout the one-and-a-half-hour-long session.
Judge Jin Jiyong of the Chengguan District Court sentenced Ms. Jin to three years with a 5,000 yuan fine on August 11, 2023. She filed an appeal with the Lanzhou City Intermediate Court, which assigned her case to judge Ma Yan. When her family called the court on November 9, 2023, they learned that Ma had ruled to uphold her original verdict.
Ms. Jin’s family had been denied visits with her for the past two-plus years. They went to the detention center again on December 2, 2023, and were finally allowed to see her for the first time since her arrest. She was transferred to the Gansu Province Women’s Prison two days later. Her family wanted to visit her there but was denied on the grounds that newly admitted practitioners were not allowed any family visits.
Ms. Jin Yijun used to work at a law firm, but could no longer practice law after the Lanzhou City Judicial Bureau refused to renew her law license in 2013 because of her faith in Falun Gong. See the following related reports for details of her past persecution and her latest prison sentence.
