A 68-year-old woman in Gongzhuling City, Jilin Province, died one month after she was arrested for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Wang Yuying was seized from her home by officers from the Fanjiatun Police Station around 6 a.m. on either August 6 or 7, 2024. The Xiangshui Town Police Station arrested her brother, Mr. Wang Jianying, 80, that same day, also for practicing Falun Gong. The siblings were taken to the Gongzhuling City Detention Center.
Ms. Wang died in custody around September 10, 2024. The authorities offered her family 30,000 yuan in exchange for their silence regarding her suspicious death. Her loved ones consulted a lawyer and were told that no one could help them win a lawsuit as the police would block all channels if they tried to collect evidence. Her family also realized that even if there were witnesses who saw Ms. Wang’s abuse and death, they probably wouldn’t dare to speak up. It’s unclear though whether the family accepted the hush-money offer.
The police submitted Mr. Wang's case to the local procuratorate, so he is now facing indictment. Mr. Wang and his sister were both targeted for their faith in the past. After he was arrested on July 27, 2015, Ms. Wang went to seek his release on August 6, only to be arrested herself and detained for 15 days. She was interrogated with torture and had her blood drawn. See the related report for details of the 2015 persecution episode.
