(Minghui.org) An 82-year-old Fushun City, Liaoning Province resident has been detained for over four months since her latest arrest in mid-July 2024 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Wei Shaomin’s ordeal stemmed from her earlier arrest on August 8, 2022, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong on the street. She was detained for ten days and released on bail. The police later submitted her case to the local procuratorate. She was taken back into custody at the Fushun City Detention Center in mid-July 2024. Other details about her case are unclear.

Ms. Wei, a retired worker of the Fushun Excavator Factory, used to have a long list of ailments from head to toe, including brain injuries, a heart condition, high blood pressure, gastric ulcers and rheumatism. The physical suffering also caused her to have a bad temper. Her apartment was leaking water to her downstairs neighbor’s newly renovated home. Instead of compensating for their damage, she refused to talk to her neighbor. Shortly after she took up Falun Gong in 1995, she didn’t only regain health, but also changed her temperament to become someone who is considerate and kind. She fixed the leaking issue in her bathroom, and her neighbor was amazed by her changes.

After the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Wei was arrested and detained multiple times. She was given three years at the Masanjia Forced Labor Camp in 2007 and sentenced to 7.5 years in 2014. While serving time in Liaoning Province Women’s Prison, she suffered three strokes and was in critical condition. Despite her condition, the inmates still verbally abused her. As her condition kept worsening, the prison released her on March 19, 2021, nine months before her term was set to end.

Upon returning home, she was dealt another blow when the local social security office suspended her pension, citing a new policy that prohibits Falun Gong practitioners from serving time for their faith from receiving any retirement benefits, although China’s labor law has no such stipulation.
