(Minghui.org) A 66-year-old Yantai City, Shandong Province, woman was recently sentenced to one year for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Liu Wenping and at least 16 other Falun Gong practitioners were arrested during a police sweep on May 9 and 10, 2024. Some of the arrested were in their 80s, and a mother-daughter duo was also among the targeted.
Ms. Liu was held in the Yantai City Detention Center. She appeared in the Zhifu District Court on August 16 and her lawyer entered a not guilty plea for her. Her family was informed of her verdict in late October 2024.
Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in July 1997. Her severe headaches, rheumatism and other health problems all disappeared soon after. After the persecution of Falun Gong started in July 1999, she remained firm in her faith and was arrested in December 1999 for doing Falun Gong exercises outdoors. She was held at the Xinhaiyang Police Station for five days and deprived of sleep.
