Mr. Huang was arrested at his son’s home in Guangzhou (the capital city of Guangdong Province) on September 19, 2023. The arresting officers from the Panyu District Domestic Security Division and the Nancun Police Station revealed that someone reported him for putting up self-adhesive stickers bearing Falun Gong information the night before.

The police raided Mr. Huang’s son’s home and confiscated the younger man’s car. His son does not practice Falun Gong.

The Panyu District Procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant against Mr. Huang on October 27 and received his case from the police on December 22, 2023. The case was later reassigned to the Haizhu District Procuratorate, which together with the Haizhu District Court was designated to handle Falun Gong cases in the region. Prosecutor Huang Jieying and her assistant Kuang Yunqi indicted Mr. Huang and forwarded his case to the Haizhu District Court on March 14, 2024.

Mr. Huang stood trial on August 8, 2024. Judge Wei Xiaoming did not respond when Mr. Huang and his lawyer asked to know the legal basis for his prosecution. The hearing lasted 75 minutes and was adjourned at around 12:15 p.m.

During the sentencing hearing on October 29, 2024, Wei sentenced Mr. Huang to four years with a 5,000 yuan fine. He expressed his intention to file an appeal soon.

This is not the first time that Mr. Huang has been targeted for his faith. He was given two years of forced labor on May 16, 2007, and sentenced to three and a half years with a 10,000 yuan fine following another arrest on July 17, 2017.
