A woman in Qiqihar City, Heilongjiang Province, died on December 10, 2024, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Yang Jie was arrested in October 2001 by officers from the Anshun Police Station. They beat her and hit her in the stomach with a shovel. They later subjected her to a torture dubbed “the big hang-up” (see image below). Her hands and feet became extremely swollen and she was unable to take care of herself for days afterward.

For 24 hours after her arrest, Ms. Yang was not allowed to use the restroom. The police also did not give her anything to drink. To make her suffer even more psychologically, they turned on a faucet so that she could hear water dripping, making her even more thirsty. The police whistled and laughed as they beat her.
Ms. Yang’s husband passed away in 2005. Chief Chu Chun of the Shuguang Police Station arrested her the very next day and extorted 2,000 yuan from her.
Deputy chief Sheng from the Guangrong Road Police Station and two other officers and broke into Ms. Yang’s home at around 8 a.m. on December 2, 2011. They confiscated her computer and other valuables. They grabbed her by her hair and kicked and punched her. She lost consciousness and started convulsing as a result of the beatings. The police then called in an ambulance to take her to the hospital.
While Ms. Yang was receiving emergency care, her older sister, Ms. Yang Min, who lived with her, and three local Falun Gong practitioners who happened to be visiting, were all arrested and taken to the Qiqihar City Second Detention Center.
Ms. Yang Jie was released on bail after she was discharged from the hospital. Her family was also forced to pay 4,000 yuan.
Around 2020, Ms. Yang and her sister went to Shandong Province to do odd jobs. The Qiqihar police tracked them down and traveled to Shandong to harass them at the factory they worked in. The sisters later returned to Qiqihar and were under close surveillance by the police.
The relentless persecution took a toll on Ms. Yang’s health. She took a fall and fainted after getting up just after 4 a.m. on December 9, 2024. She never regained consciousness and died at around 1 a.m. the next day.
