A Dehui City, Jilin Province resident developed severe medical conditions after being jailed for eight years between 2002 and 2010 for his faith in Falun Gong. The continued police harassment caused his health to further deteriorate. He passed away on October 12, 2024, at the age of 49. He is survived by his parents, who are both in their 80s.
Mr. Sun Zhen began to practice Falun Gong in October 1998. After graduating from the China University of Political Science and Law in 1999, he joined the Beijing Armed Police Corps. A few months later, in July 1999, the Chinese communist regime ordered the nationwide persecution campaign against Falun Gong. Because of appealing for the right to practice his faith, Mr. Sun was arrested in November 1999, escorted back to Dehui, and held at the Dehui City Lockup for 15 days.
Mr. Sun returned to Beijing to appeal again on July 20, 2000. He refused to report his name after being arrested by the Beijing police, and was detained at a lockup for over 20 days. The police later found his profile from his school, and he was escorted back to Dehui on August 10, 2000. By then, he was emaciated with sunken eyes and his clothes were dirty and ragged. He was detained at the Dehui City Detention Center for seven days and extorted 1,500 yuan to cover the police’s travel expense to take him back.
Mr. Sun was arrested again in Beijing on July 22, 2002. He was held at the Beijing Brainwashing Center and then sentenced to eight years by the Huairou District Court in Beijing. He first served time in a prison in Beijing and transferred back to Jilin Province. He finished serving his term at the Gongzhuling Prison and was released on August 9, 2010.
Due to torture in custody, Mr. Sun struggled with poor health after his release. To make a living, he did many odd jobs, including makeup sales, insurance sales and a factory’s deputy manager.
While he was working in Changchun, the capital of Jilin, in 2021, the Changchun police harassed him over the phone. His health continued to decline after that and he died on October 12, 2024.
