(Minghui.org) Ms. Jie Caiyun, 64, from Zhangwu County, Liaoning Province was sentenced to three years in November 2023 for practicing Falun Gong, a mind-body discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Jie went out to distribute Falun Gong informational materials on June 29, 2023 and was shadowed by six officers from the Zhangwu County Police Department. They followed her home after she was done just after 7 p.m. that day. They confiscated her Falun Gong books, laptop, about 200 yuan in cash and other valuables from her home. They took her to the Fuxin City Detention Center. Fuxin City oversees Zhangwu County.
It’s not clear which court convicted Ms. Jie in November 2023. She was previously sentenced to three years in 2009 also for her faith in Falun Gong, which she credits for restoring her health.
Taking up Falun Gong
Ms. Jie used to suffer from severe psoriasis and had to keep her sleeve cuffs and pant legs tied tightly all year long or any slight movement caused her skin flakes to fall out. Her right elbow was swollen and painful since she was a child. She couldn’t straighten her fingers and her right hand was always in a fist. She was also tormented by nephritis, hemorrhoids, rheumatism, rhinitis and many other illnesses.
Her life changed in January 1999, when she began to practice Falun Gong. Her symptoms gradually disappeared, and she became a better person. She never hesitated to lend a hand when anyone needed help. She also took the initiative to clean the public restroom used by residents in her neighborhood. After the persecution of Falun Gong began in July 1999, she never wavered in her faith so she was targeted by the authorities.
Prior 3-Year Term
On June 1, 2009, Ms. Jie was arrested for trying to seek justice for a practitioner detained for his faith. Captain Cui Haifeng of the Zhangwu County Domestic Security Office took her to the Heituozi Detention Center, where she was tortured. Vice director Wang Lijun slapped her face and punched and kicked her. Guard Yu Haiyan hit her on the face with a key card more than ten times. Another guard, surnamed Zhang, put heavy shackles on her.
Two months later, Ms. Jie was transferred to the Fuxin City Detention Center. Judge Han Liu from the Zhangwu County Court sentenced her to three years in October 2009. She was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison.
Prison guard Deng Jie instructed inmates Wang Suqing and Yang Huaixiu to abuse Ms. Jie. They did not allow her to sleep or give her enough food to eat. They also forced her to work without pay from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. From time to time, they ordered her to recite the prison rules and write thought reports.
Ms. Jie’s employer suspended her pay for two years and eight months, while she was imprisoned.
