Ms. Li Ronghui, a retired tax bureau manager in Sanhe City, Hebei Province, passed away in August 2008, in the persecution of her faith, Falun Gong. She was 83.

Ms. Li, then 75, was arrested on April 14, 2000, for doing Falun Gong exercises outdoors. The police threw her into the police car, slapped her in the face, and shocked her on her hands and chest with electric batons. She almost fainted and her face was severely swollen. After spending two days at the police station, she was given three weeks of detention.

On July 7, 2000, her workplace arranged two young men to stay at her home for the next 50 days to monitor her.

The police broke into Ms. Li’s home again on April 30, 2001 and ordered her to fingerprint a document to renounce Falun Gong. She refused to comply. The authorities again arranged people to watch her at home. When she asked how long the surveillance would last, Wang Zhiyi, the director of the tax bureau, responded, “Until you die!”

Since then on, the authorities always harassed her on major holidays or anniversaries related to Falun Gong.

Ms. Li was dealt a blow when her younger sister, Ms. Li Rong, was arrested on February 25, 2008. She died five months later, in early August 2008.
