Because she practiced Falun Gong, Ms. Li Zhengfen, a retired post office worker in Chongqing, was incarcerated in a forced labor camp and a prison for a total of five years. She was subjected to barbarous torture while in custody and developed liver cancer as a result. Ms. Li died on March 11, 2011. She was 65.

Ms. Li Zhengfen

Ms. Li went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in December 1999. She was arrested and held in the Haidian Detention Center for over ten days. After being taken back to Chongqing, she was detained in the Ba’nan District Detention Center for another 28 days.

Ms. Li was arrested again in late September 2000 and held in a brainwashing center for over a month.

Her next arrest was in January 2001, for putting up banners bearing information about Falun Gong. Officers from the Nanquan Police Station slapped her in the face, hit her on her temples, struck her eyes and back, and kicked her in her private parts. The officers also burned her face and chin with a lighter. They handcuffed her so tightly that her hands became bruised and numb. She wasn’t allowed to use the restroom and was forced to do a “horse stance” squat. The officers also hit her ankles with a broom and her ankles swelled up as a result. She lost consciousness after the beating.

When the officers transferred Ms. Li to the Yudong Detention Center two days later, they had to carry her over, as she was too weak to walk. The bruises on her face didn’t go away even after two weeks. As her eyes were injured from the beatings, she almost lost her vision.

Ms. Li was sentenced to three years on February 4, 2002. She appealed, but the Chongqing First Intermediate Court ruled to uphold her original verdict.

On October 25, 2004, only a few months after she was released, Ms. Li was arrested again for talking to people about Falun Gong. She was given two years at the Chongqing Women’s Forced Labor Camp on December 25, 2004.

At the labor camp, Ms. Li was monitored by two inmates around the clock. She was often forced to stand from 5: 30 a.m. to 12 a.m., motionless. As a result of the standing torture, as well as beatings, verbal abuse, and other mental torment, she developed liver cancer and was released on medical parole.

During the “The 5th Asia Pacific Mayors Summit” in October 2005, the police took Ms. Li back to the labor camp and held her there for another two weeks.

When she was released, Ms. Li had severe ascites and was in critical condition. By practicing Falun Gong, her condition stabilized for a few years, but her health still deteriorated over time. She died on March 11, 2011.
