An 81-year-old resident of Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province, died on January 31, 2022, after years of persecution for his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Chen Liqing
Mr. Chen Liqing served in the army for five years before becoming an elementary school teacher in Aoping Town, Pengzhou City. After he retired, he developed stomach bleeding, bronchitis, hypertension, and rheumatoid. His symptoms, however, all disappeared after he took up Falun Gong in October 1997. He also became an assistant to help other locals learn Falun Gong.
Mr. Chen was arrested in March 2004 and brutally beaten for four days. Six months later, he was sentenced to three years and admitted to the Deyang Prison.
He refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong and was brutally beaten by the prison guards. Once a guard kicked Mr. Chen on his inner thigh and groin with leather shoes. Another time he had stomach bleeding after beatings and was rushed to the hospital for emergency care. On yet another occasion, the prison guards directed inmates to lace their food and drinks with drugs. Not long before his term ended, the guards injected him with toxic drugs, causing him to temporarily develop psychiatric symptoms.
After Mr. Chen was released, the local police and Liu Yuande, the principal of his former school, harassed him at home on a regular basis. In September 2021, the local community office ordered him to renounce Falun Gong, but he firmly refused to comply.
The local social security office also suspended Mr. Chen’s pension after he was sentenced in September 2004. They never reinstated his pension. The lack of income made his life even harder after his prison release. He died on January 31, 2022.
