A Jilin City, Jilin Province, resident died on December 11, 2015, less than one year after his wife passed away, also as a result of the persecution for their shared faith in Falun Gong.

Mr. Zhang Huande and his wife, Ms. Zhang Cuiying, were repeatedly arrested for upholding their faith. Ms. Zhang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong in September 1999, two months after the persecution began. She was arrested at a Beijing hotel and taken back to Jilin. After 15 days of detention and a 1,500-yuan fine, she was released but ordered to report to the local police station on a regular basis. The local community workers also called her from time to time to see if she had gone out to raise awareness of the persecution again.

Ms. Zhang was arrested again in early February 2002, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. She was released after paying a 500-yuan fine. In the years that followed, the police harassed her and her husband several times a year.

Officer Li Xichun from the Longhua Police Station raided the couple’s home in late April 2006 and confiscated their Falun Gong books. Yin Wenli from the Longtan District Domestic Security Division led more than ten agents to raid the couple’s home on May 10, 2011. They arrested Ms. Zhang and her son, Mr. Zhang Wenjun.

While Ms. Zhang was released hours later, her son was given one and a half years of forced labor.

Ms. Zhang’s husband developed severe diabetes and had to have one leg amputated. Ms. Zhang’s health also declined. She suddenly fell into a coma in October 2014 and died one week later.

Mr. Zhang and his son filed a complaint in 2015 against Jiang Zemin, the former Chinese dictator, for launching the persecution of Falun Gong. The police harassed them at home twice after that. The elder Mr. Zhang’s medical conditions worsened. He had blood in his stool in September that year and became bedridden the following month. He died on December 11, 2015.
