A 65-year-old resident of Yutian County, Hebei Province, died on November 3, 2018, after years of arrests and harassment for upholding his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Wang Baodong and his wife took up Falun Gong in 1995. He was arrested on July 22, 1999, two days after the persecution began. He was held in a brainwashing center for one week and forced to read information that slandered Falun Gong. After he was released and returned to work, his supervisors pressured him to write statements to denounce Falun Gong. They didn’t let him go home, holding him day and night at the workplace. On February 29, 2000, his employer sent him to a brainwashing center and he was not released until mid-June 2000. He was taken straight to his workplace, where he was again forced to work and read information that slandered Falun Gong.
Mr. Wang was finally allowed to go home in late July 2004. Nine officers broke into his home on January 6, 2016, and ordered him and his wife to sign statements to renounce Falun Gong. The couple refused to comply. The police left but returned to harass them several times.
On January 3, 2017, about seven officers broke into the couple’s home and seized about 50 Falun Gong books, a computer, a printer, and a boombox. The police had already confiscated one printer earlier, so Mr. Wang had bought a new one, only to have it seized again. Mr. Wang was so distraught that he passed out. Instead of calling an ambulance, the police left. His wife managed to get him to the hospital, where he was diagnosed with a stroke. He remained in a coma for about a week before he came to, no longer to talk or recognize people and requiring a feeding tube. The police guarded his ICU room around the clock.
Mr. Wang was later hospitalized once more. The police did not cover any of his medical expenses. He remained incapacitated, unable to walk or talk or use the restroom. Two officers harassed them again on November 23, 2017. He died on November 3, 2018.
