A 64-year-old resident of Sanhe City, Hebei Province died on December 25, 2012, after suffering years of persecution for upholding her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Liu Yong took up Falun Gong in August 1997. She was the secretary of a bindery affiliated with the China Metallurgical Bureau. After the persecution began in 1999, she was repeatedly targeted for her faith.

Ms. Liu was taken to a brainwashing center in March 2001. Days later, on March 21, officer Qi Xiaoquan beat her severely. He punched her on the chest and back, and also used a mop handle to hit her on the legs. He didn’t stop the beating until the mop handle broke. He then forced Ms. Liu to squat motionless for two hours.

Ms. Liu sustained severe injuries (see photos below) as a result. Her chest hurt whenever she coughed.

Ms. Liu was arrested again on September 14, 2001 and held at a brainwashing center.

Her third arrest took place in mid-March 2002. She went on a hunger strike at the Sanhe City Detention Center and was released on bail four days later.

Ms. Liu’s employer put up an exhibit smearing Falun Gong in mid-April 2002. She ripped down the posters and was arrested and taken to the Sanhe City Detention Center. She went on a hunger strike in protest and was released four days later.

The police arrested Ms. Liu on September 15, 2002 while she was grocery shopping. She again went on a hunger strike at the Sanhe City Detention Center. Three days later, she was transferred to the Kaiping Labor Camp to serve an unknown term. The labor camp declined to admit her after she failed the required physical examination. The police released her, only to arrest her again on September 29, 2002 and give one year of forced labor.

Because Ms. Liu refused to write statements to renounce her faith, the guards at the Kaiping Labor Camp did not allow her to call her family or purchase daily necessities. They also restricted her restroom use and forced her to sit on a small stool for long hours. When she was not being tortured, she was forced to work without pay for more than ten hours a day.

At around 9 a.m. on July 12, 2011, about eight agents broke into Ms. Liu’s home and took her to a brainwashing center. She failed the required physical examination and was sent back home at around 1:10 p.m.

The police continued to harass Ms. Liu at home. Her health continued to decline, and she died on December 25, 2012.
