A native of Wuchang City, Heilongjiang Province died on March 28, 2019, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. Ms. Jiang Shufang was 82.
On July 22, 1999, two days after the persecution began, Ms. Jiang went to the provincial government located in the capital city of Harbin to appeal for Falun Gong. She was arrested and taken to the Shuangcheng District Elementary School. Around midnight, she was picked up by police from Wuchang City. They held her at a lockup for one week and extorted 500 yuan from her. After her release, Ms. Jiang faced constant surveillance and harassment.
Ms. Jiang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong on November 3, 2000 and was arrested. The security officer at the Wuchang City’s Liaison Office in Beijing seized the 180 yuan cash she had on her person. She was then taken back to Wuchang and held for 47 days. She went on a hunger strike in protest and never wavered in her faith. The police pressured Ms. Jiang’s workplace to transfer 830 yuan from her pay to them. After releasing her, the police extorted another 500 yuan from her family.
Her next arrest took place on October 1, 2001, while she was on her way home. She was taken to the Wuchang City Second Detention Center.
On September 21, 2002, at the mid-Autumn Festival, Ms. Jiang was arrested while on her way home from picking up Falun Gong informational materials from a fellow practitioner. She was later sentenced to one year and admitted to the Wuchang Prison. She was once held in an isolation cell and forced to wear shackles weighing almost 70 pounds.
Ms. Jiang went on a hunger strike in protest. She had whole body edema after 25 days. She was unable to sit, stand, walk, or eat. The prison then released her on parole. Her family was forced to pay 3,000 yuan before picking her up. By then, it was almost the end of her prison term.
Through practicing Falun Gong, Ms. Jiang soon recovered. In 2003, she moved to Sanhe City, Hebei Province in 2003 with her daughter. She was arrested at least once in Sanhe for talking to people about Falun Gong.
The relentless persecution eventually claimed Ms. Jiang’s life on March 28, 2019. It is unclear whether she died in Hebei or Heilongjiang.
