Ms. Lai Guiying, of Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, died on August 12, 2022. Her passing capped years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
She was arrested in late March 2012 after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. Her home was raided that afternoon. The police confiscated her computer and 4,000 yuan in cash. After Ms. Lai was released, she faced constant harassment from the local police station and street committee.
More than ten officers showed up at Ms. Lai’s home on the morning of June 1, 2015 and took her to the local police station. She was forced to give her fingerprints and a saliva sample. While she was soon released, Ms. Lai was arrested again after 3 p.m. that afternoon. Her husband, Mr. Cheng Huaigen, was seized as well.
A bit past 6 p.m. that day, the police handcuffed and shackled Ms. Lai and interrogated her. They also slapped her in the face. They returned to her home at 11:30 p.m. for another raid.
Her husband Mr. Cheng was later sentenced to four years and died at Jiazhou Prison on May 29, 2017.
Ms. Lai fell and broke her leg on her way back home from attending her husband’s sentencing hearing. She became disabled and had trouble walking since. She was arrested again in early 2018, while on her way home from grocery shopping. The arresting officers from the Huayang Police Station soon released her due to her leg disability.
Two officers knocked on her door at around 4 p.m. on September 22, 2021. Ms. Lai did not answer and the police shut off her power supply. They arrested her when she stepped outside to see what was going on. They took her to a hospital for a physical examination first and then to the Huayang Detention Center. The doctor there refused to admit her after reviewing the exam results.
Ms. Lai’s health kept declining and she died at a hospital on August 12, 2022.
