Ms. Zheng Wenchao, of Yi County, Hebei Province, was forced to live away from home in September 2020 to avoid being sentenced for practicing Falun Gong. She was arrested in 2021 and later sentenced to one year. Minghui.org recently confirmed that she died around March 2024. She was 48 and is survived by two minor children.
Ms. Zheng was arrested at home around 10 a.m. on May 19, 2020, by Chief Jing Mingzhong of the Chengqu Police Station and several officers. They searched her home until 2 p.m. and took her to the police station. The police also interrogated her children and ordered them to provide information about other practitioners she had contact with. The children were terrified and kept crying. The police later released Ms. Zheng on bail.
On May 19, 2020, another practitioner Ms. Gan Yuefeng, who happened to be Ms. Zheng’s relative, was also arrested by officers from the Chengqu Police Station. She was held at the Baoding City Detention Center. The police attempted to interrogate Ms. Gan’s daughter. She was traumatized and didn’t dare return home.
Police chief Jing and more than ten officers broke into the home of a third practitioner, Ms. Hu Shenjia, on June 2, 2020. They took her to the police station for a brief interrogation and summoned her again on July 5, 2020. Because she refused to tell them who provided her with informational materials about Falun Gong, they detained her at the Baoding City Detention Center. Jing continued to interrogate her two days later and attempted to force her to submit by threatening to implicate her middle-school-aged son. She was later released on bail.
Both Ms. Zheng and Ms. Hu were frequently harassed and summoned to the police station after they were released on bail. The police threatened to sentence them if they refused to tell them where they got the Falun Gong materials. They also ordered the two women to sign statements to renounce Falun Gong.
In an attempt to claim more credit from the case, the police arrested a fourth practitioner from Yi County, Ms. Gao Xiaoxiong, on August 7, 2020, when she was traveling in Zunyi City, Guizhou Province. They submitted the cases of all four practitioners to the Zhuozhou City Procuratorate and claimed it was “a gang crime.”
Ms. Zheng and Ms. Hu were summoned to the procuratorate on September 28, 2020. The prosecutor said their “crime” was very serious and both of them would be given heavy terms. Fearing the persecution, both women decided to live away from home and went into hiding.
The prosecutor continued to prosecute Ms. Gan and Ms. Gao afterwards. Both of them appeared in Zhuozhou City Court on November 27, 2020. Ms. Gao was later sentenced to two years and they were both fined 10,000 yuan. She was incarcerated in the Hebei Province Women’s Prison. Ms. Gan’s situation wasn’t clear, but Minghui.org confirmed that she was released sometime in 2022.
Ms. Hu was arrested at her rental place in early August 2023 and held at the Baoding City Detention Center. She was released on a one-year bail in early September 2023 and the bail condition was lifted in September 2024.
Ms. Zheng was arrested in April 2021, but the police kept her family in the dark about her whereabouts. Minghui.org recently confirmed that she was sentenced to one year and held at the Baoding City Detention Center. She developed severe illness symptoms and was released on medical parole at an unknown date. She died around March 2024. We are calling on insiders to provide more information about her death.
