A Xingtai City, Hebei Province resident was sentenced to 15 years in 2002 for practicing Falun Gong. He was severely tortured and released in 2008 on the verge of death. Facing continued police harassment, he passed away on February 9, 2013. He was 69.
Mr. Xu Junshan went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong on June 24, 2000. He was arrested and held at the Hebei Province Liaison Office in Beijing overnight, before being taken back to Xingtai. He was detained at the local police station for five days. During the time, the police deprived him of sleep and took turns beating him. Mr. Xu was taken to the Xingtai City First Detention Center on July 1 for two months. The police extorted 1,300 yuan from him when he was released.
Mr. Xu was arrested again towards the end of 2000 and detained for ten days, as the authorities were trying to prevent him from going to Beijing to appeal again.
In March 20001, Mr. Xu was deceived into going to the police station. He was arrested and detained for one month.
Several officers raided Mr. Xu’s home on April 13, 2001, and held him at the police station for five days. His daughter was extorted for 300 yuan. Right after his release, the police harassed Mr. Xu two more times on April 19 and 22, 2001. He strongly resisted the persecution and wasn’t arrested during these confrontations.
The police returned to Mr. Xu’s home again on April 27, 2001. As he wasn’t home, they arrested his daughter, who didn’t practice Falun Gong. She was detained for nearly two days and extorted for 1,000 yuan. After his daughter returned home, Mr. Xu’s wife was arrested. The older woman was on the verge of death due to torture when she was released a month later. Yet the police still extorted another 300 yuan from the family.
Several officers showed up at Mr. Xu’s home again on October 24, 2001. Without producing proper documents, they raided the place, beat and handcuffed Mr. Xu, and took him to a local detention center for two weeks. After that, they transferred him to a guest house, which was used as a “black jail” to torture Falun Gong practitioners.
When the police attempted to force Mr. Xu to reveal information about other practitioners, he refused to comply. In retaliation, the authorities forced his son’s workplace to fire him. During this time, Mr. Xu’s wife was also arrested, detained for five days, and extorted for 3,000 yuan.
Mr. Xu was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Qiaodong Court in July 2002. He was taken to the Tangzhuang Prison on October 23 and then transferred to the Shijiazhuang Fourth Prison the next day.
Due to torture in custody, Mr. Xu was on the verge of death and was released in September 2008. The authorities forced his children to pay a 2,000-yuan bond.
While Mr. Xu recovered after resuming practicing Falun Gong, the subsequent non-stop police harassment caused his health to decline again. He eventually passed away on February 9, 2013.
