A 62-year-old resident of Liaoyuan City, Jilin Province died on October 11, 2024, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Shang Shuxia (also known as Shang Suxia) was a former teacher at the Liaoyuan City Elementary School. She was repeatedly arrested and harassed after the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999.
Ms. Shang was arrested on May 1, 2009 after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. While in custody, Ms. Shang suddenly lost consciousness and was rushed to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with heart disease. Chief Qi Yuejun of the Nankang Police Department attempted to extort 3,000 yuan from her husband in exchange for her release. Her husband refused to pay as he was contemplating a divorce. Qi then released Ms. Shang but still harassed her at home frequently.
Qi brought seven officers to arrest Ms. Shang again on November 22, 2010 and gave her one year and nine months of forced labor two weeks later. She served time at the Heizuizi Labor Camp. See the related reports for details of her arrest.
The labor camp guards once tied Ms. Shang to a bed in a spread-eagle position for 24 hours and did not allow her to use the restroom. Her family went to the labor camp on February 16, 2011, but was not allowed to see her.
Besides physical torture, Ms. Shang was also forced to do hard labor without pay. The work involved using toxic materials to make crafts, which further damaged her health.
The labor camp extended Ms. Shang’s term by 15 days and did not release her until September 4, 2012. She was diagnosed with breast cancer after she returned home, and moved in with her daughter in Beijing in 2014. She was arrested there at least once for talking to people about Falun Gong.
Three agents from Liaoyuan City travelled to Beijing on September 3, 2021 in an attempt to harass Ms. Shang. As she was not in, and they went to her daughter’s workplace. The younger woman was also not around and they asked her colleagues to pass the message that if her mother did not renounce Falun Gong, they’d have their counterparts in Beijing “fix” her.
The relentless persecution took a toll on Ms. Shang’s already frail health. She died on October 11, 2024. It is unclear whether she passed away in Beijing or Liaoyuan.
