(Minghui.org) A 72-year-old woman in Beijing was arrested in late October 2025 for practicing Falun Gong. She is currently held at the Haidian District Detention Center.
Ms. Liu Shengping took up Falun Gong in September 1998, and many of her ailments, including headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, cholecystitis, gallstones, and lumbar muscle strain, soon disappeared. Ever since the Chinese Communist Party began to persecute Falun Gong in 1999, she has been repeatedly targeted for upholding her faith. She has served two labor camp terms and a prison term, totaling 6.5 years.
Past Persecution
Ms. Liu was given one and a half years of forced labor in 2001. At the Beijing Labor Re-education Personnel Dispatch Office, because she refused to squat or place her hands on her head, four officers beat her and shocked her with electric batons, especially on the top of her head, behind her ears, and on her neck and finger joints. They didn’t stop until it was time to eat.
On another occasion, six officers pushed her down, removed all her clothes, and tied her up in a spread-eagle position. They stepped on her head, limbs, and chest, and each of them shocked her with an electric baton. She was so severely burned that the scars were still visible when she was later transferred to the Tiantanghe Forced Labor Camp.
Ms. Liu was arrested again in March 2004 for mailing letters with information about Falun Gong. She was first taken to the Yuetan Police Station and then admitted to the Xicheng District Detention Center. When she refused to give her fingerprints, two officers grabbed her hand and injured her right middle finger.
Fifteen days later, she was taken to the Fengtai Detention Center. The guards grabbed her by her hair and slapped her face because she refused to wear the inmate’s uniform. They dragged her to an office and continued to beat her. One officer kicked her lower abdomen, tied her up, and handcuffed her behind her back, severely injuring her hands and arms. When she was taken back to the Xicheng District Detention Center months later, she was unable to get out of bed or eat on her own. The Xicheng District Court later sentenced her to 2.5 years and she was taken to the Beijing Women’s Prison.
Ms. Liu was given a forced labor camp term of two and a half years in 2007. After one year in the Beijing Women’s Forced Labor Camp, she was transferred to the Tumuji Forced Labor Camp in Inner Mongolia. The guards there often hung Falun Gong practitioners up by their wrists until they passed out. After the practitioners came to, the guards repeated the hanging torture. Sometimes the guards slapped the practitioners in the face with a shoe, whipped them with thick electric wires, or tied them up and refused to let them use the restroom. Ms. Liu reported the torture to the local procuratorate. After the guards found out, they instigated inmates to beat her and hit her head against the wall. She was unable to get up after the beating, but the guards still forced her to do the slave labor. She went into spasms and her body stiffened when the guards dragged her on the ground one day.
Ms. Liu was arrested on December 17, 2013, for distributing information about Falun Gong. She was held at a local detention center and later released on bail.
Ms. Liu was next arrested on March 2, 2018, after she was deceived by a community director into opening the door. Over ten police officers barged in and ransacked her home. She was detained at a local detention center and released on bail on March 22, 2018.
Ms. Liu was arrested again on September 6, 2018, by officers from Donghuashi Boulevard Police Station. She began to go into spasms and her chest felt tight that afternoon. The police took her to two hospitals, but the condition persisted, yet one doctor said they didn’t find anything wrong with her. During another physical exam before she was admitted to the Dongcheng District Detention Center, she was found to have dangerously high blood pressure.
Ms. Liu began to have spasms again on September 9, 2018, and was released the next afternoon. The police harassed her and her family a few more times after that.
The police submitted Ms. Liu’s case to the Dongcheng District Procuratorate in January 2019. She was forced to live away from home to avoid further persecution.
