(Minghui.org) A 60-year-old resident of Changchun City, Jilin Province, was denied family visits from time to time while serving a six-year prison term for his faith in Falun Gong.
Mr. Shi Wenzhuo was arrested on March 16, 2023. The Kuancheng District Court secretly tried him in August and December 2023, before sentencing him to six years on December 19, 2023. He appealed with the Changchun City Intermediate Court, which ruled to uphold his original verdict.
After Mr. Shi was transferred to the Gongzhuling Prison on May 14, 2024, he was subjected to various torture methods aimed to force him to renounce Falun Gong. When his family visited him on June 14, 2024, his face was dark and swollen; he had bags under his eyes; and he held onto the railing during the entire conversation, appearing to be very weak.
Mr. Shi’s family visited him once a month in July and August 2024. But when they returned to the prison in September 2024, they weren’t allowed to see him and were told that they had to obtain approval from the prison division where he was jailed. Without the approval, they would still be denied visitation even when they went there. They called the division, but no one answered the phone. They had to appeal with the prison administration office and appeals division.
On the visitation day on May 16, 2025, the family still didn’t receive the prison’s phone notification for them to visit Mr. Shi. They called the prison administration office, which then had Mr. Shi call them.
Mr. Shi’s family was allowed to visit him in person on June 27, 2025. But between July and September 2025, they were denied visitation again, as Mr. Shi refused to cooperate with an inspection by the Political and Legal Affairs Committee in July 2025. He was also forced to sit on a small stool motionless for long hours as a punishment.
It’s also reported that all Falun Gong practitioners imprisoned there must attend brainwashing sessions and write curse words in their reports. Inmate Wang Jianhang was assigned to monitor the practitioners and he was given permission by the guards to beat and verbally abuse the practitioners at will.
Mr. Shi took up Falun Gong in March 1999 and never wavered in his faith after the persecution began four months later. He has since been repeatedly targeted for upholding his faith. Prior to his latest arrest, he was given one year of forced labor in 2000 and twice sentenced to prison (nine years in 2002 and four years in 2012).
