(Minghui.org) Ms. Sun Jiping developed life-threatening anemia symptoms following her arrest for practicing Falun Gong, yet she was still admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison after she was sentenced to five years. Her health further deteriorated due to torture in the prison, and she was released on July 20, 2025, six months before the end of her term.
Ms. Sun, 73 and of Linghai City, Liaoning Province, was arrested on January 20, 2021, along with her husband, Mr. Zhou Yonglin. After nearly a month of quarantine for the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Sun was taken to the Jinzhou City Women’s Detention Center, and Mr. Zhou was transferred to the Linghai City Detention Center on February 22.
Ms. Sun’s blood disorder that had recovered through practicing Falun Gong a few years prior recurred while she was held in custody. She lost consciousness and was hospitalized for a blood transfusion days after being taken to the detention center. Her hemoglobin quickly dropped to 5 g/dL (a normal range is 12.0 and 15.5 g/dL), which also caused systemic edema.
Despite Ms. Sun’s condition, she and her husband were tried by the Linghai City Court on March 15, 2021. The judge secretly sentenced both of them to five years days later.
Ms. Sun was denied admission when she was first taken to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on June 6, 2021. The authorities took her back to the Jinzhou City Women’s Detention Center and managed to have the prison admit her on December 16, 2021, after giving her blood transfusion.
Mr. Zhou was admitted to the Panjin Prison on July 4, 2021. He also became critically ill and extremely emaciated due to the torture in prison. Yet the prison refused to release him on medical parole.
Ms. Sun’s Persecution in the Prison
Ms. Sun was held at the 12th Division of Liaoning Province Women’s Prison, which was specifically designated to persecute Falun Gong practitioners. The main torture methods used by the guards include long-term sleep deprivation and/or denied restroom use. When the practitioners soiled their pants, the inmates force-fed them feces. Some practitioners weren’t allowed to take showers or brush their teeth for as long as a month.
Ms. Sun was watched and tortured by two drug addicts, He Dan and Liang Chunyan, as well as another inmate whose name wasn’t known. One day in late December 2021, the inmates took her to a room facing north and forced her to stand in the center of the room. They took off her winter jacket and pants at night, removed the buttons of her undergarments, and forced her to stand facing the open window. In addition to the freezing torture, she was also denied restroom use for two days.
As a result of the torture, Ms. Sun’s legs became extremely swollen; she was unable to remain standing or bend her legs. As she was struggling with severe anemia in the first place, she fell into critical condition and was taken to the hospital for blood transfusion. The guards still kept her handcuffed and shackled when she was receiving treatment in the hospital. They also withdrew the remaining 2,000 yuan from her commissary account to pay for her medical expense.
When Ms. Sun was taken back to the prison, she was held at the medical division under director Wang Qi. The guards continued to torture her, forcing her to stand from morning until 9:30 or 10 p.m. every day. She had to seek permission if she needed to use the restroom. For over two months, she wasn’t allowed to take showers or do laundry. After she used the restroom, she wasn’t allowed to wash her hands. Even in the winter, she wasn’t given hot drinking water or allowed to take hot showers. When she couldn’t stand anymore, she was forced to sit all day long without moving.
One day in July 2023, Ms. Sun suddenly had sharp pain in her lower back. She was sweating with excessive pain even with the slightest movement. The guards forced her to walk up and down from the third floor several times for various medical checkups. Only when she was found to have fracture in the thoracic spine (the middle section of the spine that connects to the rib and provides structure for the chest) two weeks later did the guards allow her to lie down and rest.
On another occasion, Ms. Sun had severe bloodshot eyes and yet guard Yang still forced her to read propaganda materials smearing Falun Gong.
Ms. Sun suffered anemia again and lost her hearing in both ears in June 2025. She also had systemic edema, was short of breath and had difficulty walking.
Due to her extremely weak physical condition, Ms. Sun was released ahead of time on July 20, 2025. She moved in with her son for help with daily needs. She gradually recovered and has now returned to her own home.
