(Minghui.org) A 60-year-old woman in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province was recently sentenced to five years and fined 10,000 yuan for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhong Fangqiong, born in August 1965 and a former transport company owner, was arrested on July 7, 2024 and held in the Chengdu City Detention Center. She was sentenced by the Xindu District Court on November 18, 2025. She is now appealing the verdict.
This is not the first time that Ms. Zhong has been targeted for her faith, which she took up in March 1999 and credits for curing her congenital large cavernous hemangioma (abnormal growth of blood vessels) and severe cerebral ischemia. Since the onset of the persecution in July 1999, she has been arrested and detained numerous times for upholding her faith. She was given a one-year labor camp term following an arrest on June 14, 2000, for writing an article exposing the persecution. She endured brutal torture at the Nanmusi Women’s Forced Labor Camp and had her term extended by three months.
Ms. Zhong also served two prison terms totaling 11 years, including a seven-year term from September 2007 to September 2014 and another four-year term from October 2016 to October 2020.
Ms. Zhong moved in with her brother after she completed her second prison sentence in 2020. The police, government officials, and community members kept harassing her at her brother’s home.
On September 26, 2022, over 20 police officers, village officials and community staffers raided her brother’s home. They didn’t find any Falun Gong related materials and subsequently installed a surveillance camera outside the siblings’ home.
More than ten officers harassed Ms. Zhong again on April 26, 2023. Zhang Hu and Hu Jianguo, the Party secretary and staffer of Yucha Residential Committee, respectively, called her brother on June 2, 4, and 13, 2023, ordering him to kick her out. After Ms. Zhong moved in with her son, Liu Jia, the director of Yunlong Town Comprehensive Office, called the son and ordered him to arrange for his mother to have virtual meetings with them every day.
To keep the authorities from harassing her brother and son, Ms. Zhong went into hiding, only to be arrested on July 7, 2024 and sentenced a year later again.
