(Minghui.org) A man in Yanji City, Jilin Province, faces prosecution because he practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Li Huzhe, around 60, distributed information about Falun Gong on September 26, 2024. He was followed and arrested on his way home by three officers from the Yanji City Police Department. The police confiscated his Falun Gong books, computer and printer. He held a hunger strike at the Yanji City Detention Center and was released on October 8, 2024.
The police went to the restaurant where Mr. Li worked on November 13, 2025. They picked him up and took him to the Yanji City Procuratorate. While he refused to answer any questions, he did try to clarify the facts about Falun Gong. He was taken back to his workplace two hours later.
Mr. Li received a call from the procuratorate on December 2, 2025, and was ordered to report to them the next day. It’s not clear whether he complied.
Past Persecution
In the past 26 years, Mr. Li has been repeatedly targeted for upholding his faith, Falun Gong. He served three labor camp terms for a total of four years and three months, as well as two prison sentences totaling four years and six months. He was also held at brainwashing centers four times. While he was incarcerated, his elderly blind mother passed away. She was traumatized by his illegal arrest.
Three Labor Camp Terms
Mr. Li went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in 2001 and was given one year of forced labor. He was tortured while serving time at the Yanbian Forced Labor Camp and Yinmahe Forced Labor Camp. He was released in March 2002.
Mr. Li was arrested again in 2008 while working in Shanghai as a tutor. He was sentenced to 15 months at the Shanghai Third Forced Labor Camp.
A few months after he was released in 2010, he was arrested and sentenced to two years at the Fenjin Forced Labor Camp in Changchun City, the capital of Jilin.
Two Prison Terms
In November 2002, eight months after Mr. Li was released from the first labor camp term, the Yanbian Prefecture 610 Office, the Yanbian Prefecture Police Department, the Yanji City 610 Office, the Yanji City Police Department, and the Yilan Police Station, dispatched more than ten police cars to arrest him.
Officer Xu Xiaofeng and Shi Dezhi of the Yanji City Domestic Security Office beat Mr. Li and verbally abused him during the arrest.
After taking Mr. Li to the Yanji City Domestic Security Office, the police handcuffed and shackled him. In order to force him to answer their questions, they bent him over and wrapped the shackle around his neck, which was only 6 inches from his feet.
For three days, the police didn’t provide Mr. Li with any food or water. They forbade him from using the restroom and deprived him of sleep. He was under extreme physical suffering and mental distress.
Mr. Li was later sentenced to three years and transferred to the Jilin Prison. Due to the torture while he was imprisoned, he became weaker each day and was covered with scabies. He couldn’t eat or sleep well.
In early November 2003, Mr. Li was taken to a solitary confinement cell and held there for a month, because he refused to write statements to renounce Falun Gong. The guards also tied him up in a “death bed.”

By April 2005, Mr. Li had become incapacitated and extremely weak. His family went to the prison, only to have their visitation request denied again.
Mr. Li was released in November 2005.
For talking to some construction workers about Falun Gong on October 8, 2014, Mr. Li was reported and arrested again by nine officers from the Xinxing Police Station and Beishan Police Station. He was held at the Yanji City Detention Center and sentenced to 1.5 years around December 2015.
Brainwashing Center Detentions
Mr. Li was arrested on September 18, 2006 by six Beishan Police Station officers. His home was ransacked and he was taken to a brainwashing center.
Between June 25 and July 30, 2012, the Yanji City 610 Office, Yanji City Police Department and Yanji City Domestic Security Office, held three brainwashing sessions in Yanji City, Longjing City, and Helong City, per an order from the Jilin Provincial 610 Office. Mr. Li was taken directly from the Fenjin Forced Labor Camp to the brainwashing center.
In order to force Mr. Li to renounce Falun Gong, the guards put his legs in a double lotus position and tied him up, with his hands behind his back. They denied him restroom use and threatened to keep him tied up if he didn’t renounce Falun Gong. Although he was forced to write the renouncing statement, he soon announced to void it, as it was written against his will. The guards tied him up two more times, with the longest duration lasting over 40 hours.

Mr. Li was taken to two more brainwashing sessions in early 2021 and on July 20, 2021. He was released on April 25, 2021 and July 28, 2021, respectively.
Mother’s Passing
When Mr. Li became incapacitated due to the torture in Jilin Prison, his mother, who was blind in both eyes, asked to talk to him over the phone, but the guards refused.
The elderly woman in her 70s also struggled with severe diabetes and had trouble taking care of herself. The mental agony of missing and worrying about her son further took a toll on her health. Two months before her son was released, she was found dead at home in mid-September 2005. Her body had decomposed and her fists were clenched.
