(Minghui.org) Ms. Yang Fujing, 66, from Tianjin was sentenced to two years on July 12, 2024 for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Yang’s sentence stemmed from her arrest with ten other local Falun Gong practitioners on January 8, 2022. She was soon released on bail, but was later indicted and scheduled to stand trial on July 7, 2022. To avoid prosecution, she went into hiding and did not appeal in court.
The police later tracked Ms. Yang down and arrested her on June 24, 2024 when she and her young grandson were walking on the street. The more than ten officers took her to the hospital for a physical examination. A doctor said that she was in serious medical condition and unfit for detention. The police however still took her to a local detention center after the checkup. They released her on bail the next day fearing that she might die while in their custody.
The Ninghe District Court heard the case on July 12, 2024, and the judge sentenced Ms. Yang to two years at the end of the hearing. The evidence cited was that she was found to have exchanged 100 yuan banknotes printed with Falun Gong messages (a creative way practitioners in China use to tell people about the persecution). She was taken into custody and sent to the Ninghe District Detention Center.
It was learned in mid-January 2025 that Ms. Yang was sent to the Tianjin Women’s Prison sometime in late 2024.
Prior 3.5-Year Sentence
Ms. Yang took up Falun Gong in 2012 and soon recovered from her high blood pressure and chronic constipation. Her family also no longer had to worry that she might pass out anywhere anytime, a condition that persisted for years and puzzled her doctors.
For sharing her amazing experience with Falun Gong, Ms. Yang was reported and arrested on October 26, 2014. She was held at the Tianjin Detention Center for an unknown amount of time. After she was released, the police kept harassing her at home. She was forced to live away from home for a period of time.
Mr. Yang was arrested again on the night of August 26, 2015, while she and another practitioner were distributing Falun Gong informational materials together. The Ninghe District Court sentenced her to three and a half years on January 26, 2016. Her appeal was rejected by the Tianjin Second Intermediate Court. She was transferred from the Ninghe District Detention Center to the Tianjin Women’s Prison on July 7, 2016.
A prison guard called Ms. Yang’s family on August 10, 2016, saying that she fell ill and required 5,000 yuan for her medical treatment. Her loved ones rushed to the prison that day and were heartbroken to see her on IV trips, looking emaciated and haggard. She said that her blood sugar level had been as high as 20 mmol/L (when a normal range is between 3.9 mmol/L and 5.6 mmol/L). She complained about excessive thirst, fatigue, and frequent urination. She was also diagnosed with erysipelas (a skin infection involving the dermis layer of the skin).
Ms. Yang was still healthy right before her prison transfer and her family were shocked to hear that she developed so many symptoms after one just month of imprisonment.
After her release in February 2019, Ms. Yang faced constant harassment from the police and government officials. She lived in fear and eventually sold her house and moved away.
