(Minghui.org) Falun Dafa’s main book, Zhuan Falun, was officially introduced on January 4, 1995, during a publication ceremony in Beijing. Written by Falun Dafa’s founder, Mr. Li Hongzhi, the book has been translated into 50 languages since it was first introduced 30 years ago, guiding millions of people to cultivate on an upright path and restore their moral values. Anesthesiologist Jiang Minxian, who worked at a large teaching hospital in Taiwan, is one of these beneficiaries.
Anesthesiologist Jiang Minxian said that Zhuan Falun opened a new chapter in her life.
Introduced to Falun Dafa and Zhuan Falun
Born into a family of doctors and influenced by their belief in Buddhism, Jiang Minxian was interested in Buddhist scriptures, stories about gods, Buddhas, and sages. She yearned to follow a spiritual path, but put aside her dream to follow her parents’ wishes, and dedicated herself to her studies in order to become a doctor. However deep down, she wished to find her true purpose and goal in life.
In her sophomore year Minxian learned that her classmate practiced Falun Dafa (also called Falun Gong) so she asked her about it. Her classmate lent her a copy of Zhuan Falun, and asked her to read the book’s contents through at least once without bringing in any preconceived notions. Minxian found the instructions unusual, but figured it was because her friend only had this one copy and wanted it back soon. After she began reading the book, Minxian said she couldn’t put it down.
Minxian spent two whole nights reading Zhuan Falun and was rewarded by having all her questions in life answered. While studying in junior high school, her Chinese teacher often told her class stories about Buddhas, gods and the cycle of reincarnation. The teacher also encouraged everyone to recite Buddhist scriptures. While Minxian gained plenty of knowledge about Buddhism, she had a lot of questions. That night, after she read, “no Dharma is definitive” and “different levels have different Fa,” she was shocked and impressed and thought, “This is the most brilliant explanation I’ve heard so far!
“I realized why I failed to advance in my understanding, despite memorizing and reciting the Buddhist scriptures repeatedly!” Minxian threw her heart into reading Zhuan Falun. The knowledge within the book was so profound that she said, “I’ve finally obtained the Fa! I’ve finally found a true cultivation method! Thank you Master for guiding me to Falun Dafa!”
After reading the second lecture in Zhuan Falun: The Issue of the Celestial Eye, Minxian recalled some of her childhood experiences. “Before I started elementary school, my parents wouldn’t let me watch TV. Each day after I went to bed, I closed my eyes and I was able to watch exciting shows, cartoons and operas in my head. As a child I always felt the presence of many eyes in the sky, watching over me and everything in this world.
“This truly is a precious book! It accurately explained my childhood experiences and even resolved my previous doubts about cultivating in Buddhism. Any new questions or doubts I had after I read one chapter of Zhuan Falun was addressed in the next chapter.” Minxian was convinced she found a lifelong treasure. “Before I even finished reading the book, I knew I had to practice Falun Dafa.”
While reading Zhuan Falun, Minxian recalled a seven-line poem from a Qing dynasty fantasy novel, Flowers in the Mirror. “I sailed the waves for several autumns and survived the harsh journey. I have finally arrived at my destination, why would I be willing to set sail again?” Minxian realized, “In this world, one is destined to repeat the cycle of reincarnation over years and lifetimes. Yet in this lifetime, I’ve had the good fortune to encounter Dafa, obtain a human body and escape this cycle through enlightenment. I finally found my way in life, so why would I be willing to sail through the path of reincarnation again?”
Eliminating Jealousy
Before she began practicing Dafa, Minxian thought she was an honest and kindhearted person who could endure hardships. She was bullied and therefore suffered losses in life. In contrast, she felt her peers were calculating and aggressive people who bullied and took advantage of others. She felt aggrieved and unhappy.
As she continued studying the Fa, Minxian was surprised to find the phrase “feeling wronged” mentioned seven times within the chapter “Jealousy” in Zhuan Falun, and had an epiphany, “Doesn’t this describe my current state of mind! Whenever I failed to get what I deserved, I believed it was because others were too cunning. I always felt indignant to be the only one who suffered losses. These feelings must be from my deeply hidden sense of jealousy!”
After realizing her flaw, Minxian began looking for her other hidden attachments. “In the past, no matter how big or small the issue was, as long as my boss didn’t treat me well, my preparations were poorly carried out when I failed to arrive on time. Or, if my subordinates failed to meet my standards, I lost my temper. I was so angry that I couldn’t sleep.” In order to eliminate her attachments, Minxian reminded herself before heading to work, “Remember to be tolerant, maintain a heart of compassion, and stop getting angry.”
In the process of looking inward, Minxian realized, “Because I consider myself better than others, I cannot tolerate my superiors’ doubts or others’ mistakes.” After examining herself and correcting her sense of superiority, Minxian’s anger towards others vanished.
In addition, she discovered the importance of “putting others first.” Minxian helped coordinate matters when a classmate passed away. But while dealing with many people and tasks, however, she let herself become emotionally involved. “I thought some people liked to show off, some were cautious while others were lazy. I felt I was treated unfairly. Fortunately because I practice Falun Dafa, I quickly detected and eliminated these feelings.
“After eliminating jealousy and letting go of my grievances, I found myself calmly listening to my classmates’ concerns. I considered other’s difficulties, and carried out my responsibilities. When I’m not driven by my own emotions, this mindset of ‘putting others before myself’ is the state of a compassionate person.”
Assimilating to the Principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance
In her job as an anesthesiologist at a teaching hospital, Minxian applied Dafa’s teachings to cultivate her character and improve her professional skills. She strove to embody the principles of Dafa and set a good example for her students. “Before leaving my care, these medical interns always voiced their reluctance to leave. Some sent me handwritten cards and gave me top marks on my teaching evaluations.”
Having cultivated her moral character according to the requirements of Zhuan Falun, Jiang Minxian has a reputation for being a compassionate doctor and teacher.
Deeply loved by her students, Minxian won accolades such as “Excellent Teaching Physician,” “Best Teaching Physician,” and is one of the top three teachers in the hospital. A senior professor asked her, “How do you do it? I also want to be your student and experience the feeling of being taught by you.” Minxian replied, “The secret is to ‘put others first.’”
While it is common for patients to give letters of gratitude to the medical team after receiving treatment, it is extremely rare for patients to thank their anesthesiologists, because they seldom communicate. However, Minxian repeatedly received thank-you letters from patients. A colleague asked, “Did you treat that patient particularly well?” Minxian replied, “I treat all my patients equally!” The hospital director asked, “Why do patients often write you thank-you letters?”
Faced with affirmation and praise from her colleagues, Minxian tells them, “There’s no secret! I just follow the teachings of Falun Dafa, live and work according to the principles of Truthfulness-Compassion-Forbearance, maintain a peaceful mentality, be considerate of my patients and always put them before myself!”
