A 58-year-old resident of Hulunbuir City, Inner Mongolia died on January 8, 2022, after decades of persecution for his faith in Falun Gong.

Mr. Xu Baijun, formerly a technician at the Zhalantun Pulp Mill, took up Falun Gong in 1998 and became a more conscientious worker and a kinder person. After the persecution began the following year, he was taken to the local police station for interrogation. One spring day in 2001, the police broke into his home and deceived his wife, also a Falun Gong practitioner, into going with them to the police office. She was arrested upon arrival and taken to a brainwashing center held at a municipal hotel.

Mr. Xu did odd jobs in Beijing for a while. When he returned home in 2005, he found himself monitored by the police. Wherever he went, someone would be following him. Two officers deceived him into reporting to the Zhengyang Police Station one day and interrogated him for two hours.

From 2006 to 2017, Mr. Xu’s wife was twice held at brainwashing centers and thrice sentenced to prison for practicing Falun Gong. He struggled to raise their child alone. The police still harassed him from time to time. They once arrested him and cuffed his hands to a heating pipe at the police station. They did not allow him to use the restroom for several hours. He was later moved to a lockup and held for more than 40 days.

Mr. Xu had just stepped outside his apartment building at around 2:30 p.m. on November 11, 2009, when more than ten plainclothes officers seized him. They brought him inside to raid his home. He then learned that the police had arrested his wife hours earlier and were looking for “evidence” against her.

The police interrogated Mr. Xu at the Hexi Police Station that night, with his hands cuffed to a metal bed. The next night he was taken to the Zhalantun Detention Center, where the police came four times to interrogate him. He was released 45 days later.

Mr. Xu was arrested again in late December 2016, after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. He was held at a detention center for an unknown amount of time.

Between 2019 and 2021, the police and community workers harassed Mr. Xu numerous times in an attempt to make him renounce his faith. He firmly refused to comply with their demands. The relentless persecution, however, took a toll on his health. He died on January 8, 2022.
