An 82-year-old woman in Tangshan City, Hebei Province, died on April 23, 2024, after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Ji Shuying, an official at the local Qianxi County Trade and Commerce Bureau, used to suffer from many health problems, including a heart condition, gynecological ailments, migraines, sinusitis, general weakness, and bloating. She had to take early retirement as a result. All her symptoms, however, were gone in less than two months of her taking up Falun Gong in May 1998.
After the persecution began in July 1999, Ms. Ji worked hard to tell people that Falun Gong was good. The police discovered that she went to another practitioner’s place once a week to pick up Falun Gong materials to distribute. While they did not arrest her at the time, they often summoned her to the local police station for interrogation.
The police eventually arrested her on March 26, 2003, and took her to the Chengguan Police Station. Officer Wang Yinguang put her in a metal cage, treating her like an animal. She felt humiliated beyond words. The police released her on bail on April 25, 2003. They never returned the 3,000-yuan bail bond.
Ms. Ji was taken back into custody on June 3, 2003, and put in the Tangshan City Second Detention Center. Long Lihua, head of the Qian County Detention Center, extorted 3,000 yuan from her husband. Officer Zhu Zhengang extorted 3,000 yuan from Ms. Ji’s son.
The detention center forced Ms. Ji to pay 700 yuan to cover her living expenses there. She was released on June 23, 2003, but was still kept under close surveillance. Her husband was unable to cope and often lashed out at her. He even threatened to stab her. Her siblings also distanced themselves from her for fear of being implicated.
Officers Zhu Zhengang and Xu Zhigang deceived Ms. Ji into going to the police station on July 20, 2003, and said they’d let her go home right after they asked her some questions. But they arrested her and took her to the Kaiping Labor Camp instead. At the entrance to the labor camp, she was told that she was to serve a two-year forced labor term.
A newly-hired guard forced Ms. Ji to maintain a certain posture for long hours. Two inmates were assigned to take turns watching her around the clock. They did not allow her to sleep and forced her to sit on a small stool for a whole night. Her back hurt badly as a result.
As a result of the abuse, Ms. Ji developed high blood pressure and was released on parole on September 25, 2003. She was arrested again on October 24, 2005, and held at the Qianxi County Lockup for 15 days. Her Falun Gong books and computer were confiscated during the arrest. She later manged to get her computer back.
