A 74-year-old resident of Kaifeng City, Henan Province, died on November 14, 2023, while still serving a 3.5-year term outside of prison for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Zhang Guimei was arrested in 2021 after being reported for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. The Shunhe District Court sentenced her to three and a half years with a 5,000-yuan fine. Due to health reasons, she was allowed to serve time outside of prison.
The police put Ms. Zhang under close surveillance and often harassed her at home, taking pictures of her and threatening her to send her to jail. Her health further declined and she often fell. Her family was unable to care for her and sent her to a nursing home around September 2023.
Officer Wang Yanan (in her 30s) and others harassed Ms. Zhang in the nursing home. They again photographed and filmed her. She died two months later on November 14, 2023.
