(Minghui.org) A police department in Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, refused to release a Sichuan woman after the Lijiang City Procuratorate twice returned her case, citing insufficient evidence. An insider revealed that the police planned to submit the case a third time soon.

Ms. You Quanfang, 56, from Pengzhou City, Sichuan Province (about 500 miles from Lijiang), was arrested on April 21, 2023, while visiting her daughter’s family in Lijiang. The Lijiang police believed she distributed Falun Gong materials there and detained her for 15 days.

Falun Gong is a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

The Lijiang police continued to monitor Ms. You’s daily activities and didn’t let her to go out unsupervised after they released her on bail on May 5, 2023. She soon returned to her home in Pengzhou.

The Lijiang police called Ms. You’s daughter on July 4, 2023, and demanded that her mother return to Lijiang. Ms. You didn’t comply. On September 21, 2023, the street committee in Ms. You’s mother’s neighborhood visited her and said that the Lijiang Police Station sent them a letter asking where Ms. You was.

To avoid further persecution, Ms. You was forced to live away from home. She was arrested in late July 2024 by Lijiang police and is held at the Gucheng District Detention Center in Lijiang.

The Gucheng District Police Department submitted the case against Ms. You to the Lijiang City Procuratorate, which returned the case citing insufficient evidence. The police tried again and the procuratorate returned the case in December 2024. According to insiders, the police planned to submit the case a third time soon.

This is not the first time that Ms. You has been targeted for her faith. She was previously given one and a half years of forced labor in 2000 and sentenced to one year in prison in April 2015. See the related reports for details of her past persecution.
