Letter from Archbishop: A Message “of the Utmost Importance in Our Current Days”

Letter from Archbishop Makarios Griniezakis of the Greek Orthodox Church of Australia (The Epoch Times)

Archbishop Makarios Griniezakis of the Greek Orthodox Church of Australia watched Shen Yun in Sydney on February 26. Days after, he wrote to Shen Yun to extend his “heartfelt congratulations” for the artists’ “brilliant artistic revival” of a divinely-inspired culture.

“Through this rich and most captivating performance, you offer a beautiful and spiritual message to the wider society, which is of the utmost importance in our current days,” Archbishop Makarios wrote in a March 3 letter to the Shen Yun cast, crew, and production team, which was shared with local presenters of the performance.

“This testimony of cultural and spiritual revival is not only paramount for the people of China, but it sends a pertinent message to the whole world.”

“It is through the artistic exploration of faith, love, hope, and unity that the audience is able to contemplate such virtues of which the contemporary world seeks not only to deny but to systematically reject,” the letter reads.

The performance allows audiences to “realize that there indeed exists something beyond our visible and material world,” he wrote, convincing the modern man to “search for something deeper than ourselves” in this world and beyond.

He related to the Shen Yun members, who are people of faith as well.

“As you most assuredly know, these achievements do not come about without hard work, preparation, dedication, and an earnest desire to excel with our God-given talents and abilities,” the letter reads.

“It is therefore most evident that through your commitment and willing perseverance, you have excelled most graciously in your ability to bring the magnificence of 5,000 years of traditional Chinese civilization vividly back to life.”

“Best Work I’ve Ever Seen”

Glen Threlfo, a wildlife and landscape photographer and documentary maker, saw Shen Yun in Gold Coast on March 16.

“Amazing, very moving, and also very effective. This is the best work I’ve ever seen in the world, really,” he said.

“I Congratulate the Composer”

Luis Cobos (NTD Television)

Renowned Spanish musician Luis Cobos saw Shen Yun in San Lorenzo de El Escorial on March 15.

“I thought the show was an explosion of art, of beauty, talent, neatness, sensitivity, but there is also a lot of emotion. I really liked the combination of the choreographies and the music, which are simple but profound melodies,” said Mr. Cobos.

“The beauty, the tranquility, the most spiritual, the most mundane, the peoples. I mean, I congratulate the composer. I don’t know who it is if it’s one or several, but I congratulate him because they have managed to portray all of this with great professional skill,” he said.

“Message of Love and Kindness”

Christine Wilkinson (NTD Television)

Christine Wilkinson, a ballet teacher and a former professional ballet dancer, saw Shen Yun in Gold Coast on March 16.

“It was spectacular, absolutely. Like nothing I’ve seen before. Absolutely beautiful. The costuming was amazing. The precision, the movements of the dancers, the choreography – and the screen at the back just took it to a whole other level,” Ms. Wilkinson said.

“Behind all of it was the message of love and kindness, and compassion and doing the right thing. We need more of that in the world,” she said.

“Very Professional and Very Elegant”

Dawn Dekle and Ray Warner (The Epoch Times)

Lawyers Dawn Dekle and Ray Warner saw Shen Yun in Escondido on March 16.

“Very engaging. The back screen, how they interact with [it,] that is amazing. How they jump into it and out of it is first class,” said Ms. Dekle, dean of a law school.

“The costumes. Whoever the costume designer is—the bright colors, the fit—wonderful,” she said.

Moreover, Ms. Dekle loved that the artists’ mission is to bring back China’s 5,000 years of divine-inspired culture and values. The performance “hearkens back to before the Cultural Revolution, so they get to have their culture, their dance, their singing, their religion,” she shared.

“The divine doesn’t exist in communist China, so I can see that there’s an expression on the stage of all of this. It’s really well done. It’s very, very professional and very elegant,” she said.

Ms. Dekle believes that Shen Yun is an opportunity for Americans to open up to the “Eastern traditions of doing things.”

“It’s nice to see because the dancing is a bit different, their approach to expression is a bit different, harmony is different—In the West, you have a lot of [dissonance] in the arts, but here you have a lot of harmony. To see all that is really beautiful. Very, very well done,” she said.

Mr. Warner, too, enjoyed the performance and was captivated by Shen Yun’s storytelling. He thought the show was “very exciting, very interesting, very colorful.”

“There’s no other show, no other presentation around here that is culturally as engaging as this. It’s very nice,” he said.

“Kindness and Love”

Tom and Robin Kenny (The Epoch Times)

Tom Kenny, his wife Robin, and other family members saw Shen Yun in Baltimore on March 16. There was a total of 14 of them in attendance together.

“This show was amazing! The choreography and the singing took me completely by storm, even hypnotic at times,” said Tom, the chief operating officer of a U.S. federal government contractor.

“Kindness and love. These emotions were vividly presented in the performance,” he said.

Robin, an advanced quality management expert, said, “The performance showed us that if you keep your faith, you will eventually see the light.”

Chinese Audience Member: “Very Amazing”

Ms. Shen from Shanghai is the head of product compliance for a company in St. Louis. She saw Shen Yun in St. Louis, on the afternoon of March 15. This was her second time seeing Shen Yun.

Ms. Shen said that when she first came to the United States, her American colleague recommended Shen Yun to her. At that time, she refused because all the information about Falun Gong and Shen Yun in her mind came from the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) propaganda.

She later learned the facts about Falun Gong and saw that Falun Gong was not what the CCP claimed, and that it was the CCP that persecuted Falun Gong and deceived the people. Therefore, Ms. Shen watched Shen Yun for the first time two or three years ago. “I thought it was shocking... very amazing.” She said, “Watching it today, I still feel touched.”

She spoke about the piece depicting the CCP-sanctioned ongoing forced organ harvesting, “(A Falun Gong practitioner) suffered cornea removal while alive, and later regained sight. That says that if there is faith and the power of the divine, there is still hope.”

Ms. Shen expressed admiration for the courage of Shen Yun artists, “I admire them very much. (They) have persisted for so many years. I hope they can continue doing so and spread (divine Chinese) culture.”
