A retired engineer of the Pukou District Construction Bureau in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province was forced to move to a senior center at the end of 2023. She wasn’t allowed to go home and died four months later. She was in her 90s.

Ms. Wu Chunru was targeted for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. For giving out a flash-drive with information about Falun Gong in her neighborhood in 2023, she was reported and harassed by officers from the Zhujiang Police Station.

Under pressure from the Pukou District Political and Legal Affairs Committee, Pukou District 610 Office, Pukou District Police Department, and Pukou District Construction Bureau, Ms. Wu’s children were forced to send her to a senior center at the end of 2023. She asked to go home, but the senior center didn’t allow her to leave. Due to the mental distress, she soon passed away in April 2024.

Prior to her latest persecution, Ms. Wu had been repeatedly targeted in the past two decades for upholding her faith.

She was first arrested in February 2000, when she went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong. She was escorted back to Jiangsu Province and held in a hotel run by the police. Pressured by the authorities, her family forced her to write a statement to renounce Falun Gong. She also had to pay for the high cost of the hotel stay.

Ms. Wu was arrested again in July 2000 and held at the same hotel for a week, as the police were trying to prevent her from going to Beijing to appeal at the one-year anniversary of the persecution.

The police attempted to arrest Ms. Wu in late September 2000, but were stopped by her family. She went to the Zhujiang Police Station in early October 2000 and urged the police not to participate in the persecution, only to be arrested and detained for a month. She managed to escape in mid-November 2000 and went to Beijing to appeal again. She was arrested and taken back to the same police hotel.

After another arrest in March 2001, Ms. Wu was admitted to the Zutangshan Psychiatric Hospital even though she had no mental illness. She was held there for nearly two years. In the persecution of Falun Gong, mentally healthy practitioners are often taken to psychiatric hospitals and subjected to involuntary drug administration. Ms. Wu was forced to pay for her stay in the psychiatric hospital.

When the 10th National Games were held in Nanjing in October 2005, the Jiangsu Provincial Public Security Department ordered the police and the 610 Office to strictly monitor Falun Gong practitioners and prevent them from raising awareness about the persecution during that time. Ms. Wu was arrested for mailing a letter with information about Falun Gong. Her home was ransacked and she was detained for a month.

In October 2015, Ms. Wu was harassed for filing a criminal complaint against Jiang Zemin, the former head of the Chinese communist regime who ordered the persecution. She had a stroke after being terrified by the police. Through practicing Falun Gong, she recovered quickly and was able to walk on her own three months later.

Ms. Wu was arrested again in 2018 and released on bail. She was arrested another time on November 19, 2019 while shopping. She was detained briefly and later released.
