A Yichang City, Hubei Province resident passed away on February 2, 2025, after enduring years of persecution for her faith, Falun Gong. She was 79 years old.
Ms. Xia Jimei took up Falun Gong before the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999. Once a uterine cancer patient, she was greatful to regain health soon after she began practicing Falun Gong. Her son also joined her in the practice after witnessing her changes.
Ms. Xia and her son were targeted by the authorities because they upheld their faith in the face of the persecution. Her son was arrested in April 2016 and later sentenced to a 3.5-year prison term. After he was released from the Fanjiatai Prison in October 2019, both he and Ms. Xia were repeatedly harassed by the police and residential committee staffers. The mental pressure took a toll on Ms. Xia’s health. She began to lose her vision and her legs became weak.
During the “Zero-out Campaign” that started in 2020, Zhou Xiangdong, the head of Gezhouba Dam Domestic Security Division, broke into Ms. Xia’s home one day and carried her into a car. He said that he was taking her to the residential committee, only to drive her to the Yichang City Care Center, a brainwashing center in disguise.
Ms. Xia strongly protested the arbitrary arrest and detention. Due to her dangerously high blood pressure, she was released around midnight. Yet the police arrested her son the next day at noon from their shared residence, and detained him for a week. After he was released, the authorities installed two cameras, one facing his front door, and the other at the entrance of his apartment building.
Due to the continued harassment, Ms. Xia’s health kept worsening. She could no longer read books and her legs were so weak that she couldn’t walk on her own. Succumbing to the persecution, she passed away on February 2, 2025.
