A Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province resident developed a mental disorder while detained for practicing Falun Gong. His condition kept declining after he was released in September 2023, and he was in constant fear. He died six months later, on April 1, 2024. He was 77.
Mr. Chen Yadong, an arborist, was arrested on February 16, 2023, after being reported for talking to people about Falun Gong. The arresting officers from Chang’an Town Police Station also raided his home. His son was summoned to the police station in the evening, but the police didn’t allow him to see Mr. Chen, with the excuse that Mr. Chen refused to renounce Falun Gong. They sent the younger man home, without revealing anything regarding his father’s case.
The family didn’t receive any update about Mr. Chen for the next seven months. One day in September 2023, they suddenly received a call and were ordered to go to Bin County to pick up Mr. Chen. They were shocked to see the once healthy man with a sharp mind had become someone who was timid and confused. His eyes were dull; his body kept shaking; and he kept mumbling “I want to go home.”
Upon returning home, Mr. Chen no longer recognized anyone. He appeared to be afraid of light and often stayed in the corner. He sometimes grabbed some clothes or a chair and then ran away, while mumbling “I want to go home.” He died six months later, on April 1, 2024.
Mr. Chen was a veteran Falun Gong practitioner. When the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution in 1999, he was the only practitioner in his village. He often rode bikes more than ten miles to get Falun Gong materials from practitioners in the nearby township, and then visited people in his village door to door to clarify the facts about Falun Gong.
Due to his courageous actions, the police often harassed him. Once he wasn’t home when the police came. They raided his place and took away the photo of Falun Gong’s founder.
Prior to the Chinese Communist Party’s 19th Congress in 2017, the police harassed Mr. Chen multiple times. He wasn’t in when they came the first time. They returned not long after and took photos around his home without his permission.
Mr. Chen wasn’t home when the police came for the third time on November 17, 2017. They confiscated several photos of Falun Gong’s founder. When Mr. Chen ran into the police on his way home, they questioned him as to whether he still practiced Falun Gong and he said yes. Mr. Chen went to the police station on December 4, 2017, seeking the return of the photos of Falun Gong’s founder. The police only returned one and said they had already burnt the other two.
