While serving a seven-year term for practicing Falun Gong, a Tangshan City, Hebei Province resident was abused to the point of becoming seriously ill. The prison authorities did not release him on parole until November 6, 2023, when he was on the verge of death. He faced continued harassment at home and died on July 18, 2025. He was 66.
Mr. Tian Shisheng was arrested at home on the morning of July 3, 2019, by over a dozen police officers. They seized his wife, Ms. Tian Shulan, also a Falun Gong practitioner. The couple were later convicted in December 2019, with Mr. Tian sentenced to seven years and his wife five years.
Mr. Tian was admitted to the fourth branch of Jidong Prison, also known as the Jidong Branch of the Hebei Provincial Prison Administration Bureau, on May 19, 2020. Located in Tangshan City, Jidong Prison has nine branches. Ms. Tian was admitted to the Hebei Province Women’s Prison on June 15, 2020.
Due to abuse in prison, Mr. Tian began to have pus and blood in his stool since July 2022. His condition worsened in November that year, but his request for a medical examination was denied. It wasn’t until March 2023 that the prison authorities got approval from higher-ups to take him to an outside hospital for a checkup.
A doctor examined Mr. Tian and questioned why he wasn’t brought in earlier. The doctor implied that it was too late for effective treatment.
The prison took Mr. Tian back and later had him receive another round of tests at the Tangshan Xiehe Hospital. He was kept at the hospital for nine days, but was not given any treatment.
After he was taken back to the prison, Mr. Tian was transferred to the team for the infirm. He was never given the exam results at those two hospitals.
On November 6, 2023, the prison authorities suddenly notified Mr. Tian’s family to pick him up. They just said he was released on parole and still refused to reveal his exam results.
The local police kept harassing Mr. Tian at home and ordered him to report to the local judicial bureau on a regular basis. They also warned him to be on standby to be interrogated. He struggled to recover and died on July 18, 2025.
