A Dalian City, Liaoning Province resident passed away in February 2024, after suffering over two decades of persecution for practicing Falun Gong.

Ms. Zhang Yunxiang took up Falun Gong in 1994 and soon recovered from a stomach condition that had been tormenting her since 1976. When the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong on July 20, 1999, she went to the Dalian City government that very day to appeal, only to be arrested and held at a middle school until 9 p.m.

Ms. Zhang did the Falun Gong exercises in a park (date unknown) and was arrested by Mingze Police Station officers. The police said she violated a traffic law for doing the exercises in public and held her at the Yaojia Detention Center for seven days.

Ms. Zhang was arrested another time by Mingze Police Station officers while visiting a fellow Falun Gong practitioner. The police accused her of being part of an illegal gathering and held her at the Yaojia Detention Center for 45 days.

Ms. Zhang went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in late 1999 and was arrested again. After two months at the Yaojia Detention Center, she was taken to the Dalian Forced Labor Camp to serve a two-year term. Due to her poor health, the labor camp refused to admit her. Ms. Zhang was released on medical parole and fined 5,000 yuan. As she only had 3,000 yuan in her bank account, the police seized her bank card and said they would return it after collecting another 2,000 yuan from her salary for the next five months (her monthly salary was 400 yuan).

Ms. Zhang was arrested another time in 2008 for talking to people about Falun Gong. Officers from the Shengliqiao Police Station searched her bag and confiscated the 300 yuan cash she had.

Ms. Zhang’s last arrest was in 2014 when she was visiting a local practitioner. Several officers suddenly broke the lock and stormed in. They beat Ms. Zhang, stomped on her and yanked her hair. A handful of her hair was pulled out and her scalp was bleeding. The police also tied her up and taped her mouth. They confiscated her cellphone and took her to the Quanyong Police Station. She was released in the evening.

The persecution over the years took a toll on Ms. Zhang’s health. She died in February 2024. She was 76.
