An 86-year-old woman in Guang’an City, Sichuan Province passed away in mid-January 2021 after suffering years of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. Her husband, also a Falun Gong practitioner, was ordered to pay the “debt” she allegedly “owed” to the government. When he died at 94 at the end of June 2024, the authorities ordered the couple’s surviving family members to pay the “debt” that he also refused to pay.

Ms. Huang Zhihui and Mr. Xu Renhui both took up Falun Gong in 1996. Ms. Huang recovered from her numerous diseases, including pyelonephritis, arrhythmia, chronic bronchitis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Her husband’s hepatitis B and lung cancer also disappeared.

After the communist regime launched the persecution of Falun Gong in July 1999, the couple held firm to their faith and were both repeatedly targeted. Ms. Huang went to Beijing to appeal for Falun Gong and was detained for one month (exact date unknown). She was sentenced to three and a half years in prison in 2000 and another three years in 2011.

While serving time at the Sichuan Province Women’s Prison, Ms. Huang was forced to renounce her faith against her will. She lived in fear after being released.

Mr. Xu was also sentenced to three years in 2000 and another three years in 2009. Both times he served time at the Deyang Men’s Prison and was forced to renounce Falun Gong against his will.

The couple were arrested at least one more time in 2016. The repeated persecution took a toll on their health. Both were hospitalized. Ms. Huang died in mid-January 2021 and Mr. Xu passed away in late June 2024.

From an unknown time, the authorities started deducting 2,500 yuan from Mr. Xu’s pension and never reinstated the full amount. They also claimed that Ms. Huang “owed” them 500 yuan (the nature of it was unknown). She did not pay and they transferred the “debt” to her husband after her passing. When he also died, they transferred it to the couple’s surviving family members. It was unclear whether her loved ones paid the “debt.”
