A 72-year-old woman in Baoji City, Shaanxi Province, passed away on September 17, 2025, after enduring over two decades of persecution for practicing Falun Gong.
Ms. Li Cuifang, former chief financial officer of Hualian Industrial Corporation, took up Falun Gong in early spring of 1996. Her many ailments soon disappeared and she also became kinder and more considerate.
After the Chinese Communist Party ordered the persecution of Falun Gong in 1999, Ms. Li was given three labor camp terms, including a one-year term in March 2000, a 1.5-year term in July 2001 (term later extended by three months), and a two-year term around July 2003.
While in custody, Ms. Li was constantly deprived of sleep, force-fed, tied up, forced to work without pay, hung up by the wrists, forced to wear straightjacket, and held in solitary confinement. During her third forced labor term, the guards added toxic drugs into her food and she developed symptoms of schizophrenia. She also experienced extremely high blood pressure (240/120 mmHg), poor memory, dizziness, and failed heart and lung functions. She was so weak that she was released one year ahead of time. See the related report below for details of the torture she suffered in the labor camp.
In addition to the incarceration and torture, Ms. Li and her husband, who didn’t practice Falun Gong, also had their pension, healthcare and many other benefits suspended. The couple, their two children and elderly parents (who relied on financial support from them) struggled to make ends meet.
Ms. Li was harassed at home on April 11, 2024, by officers from the Dongfeng Road Police Station and community workers. They raided her place and confiscated a computer, a printer, blank DVDs, flash drives, over 50 Falun Gong books, Falun Gong informational materials, and 2,000 yuan in cash with Falun Gong information printed on them. Due to her poor health, the police didn’t arrest her, but put her on bail.
The police kept harassing Ms. Li at home. The mental distress caused further decline in her health. She became incapacitated and often fell into a coma. Before she was hospitalized in July 2025, the police went to her home to take photos of her. During her two-week hospital stay, the police also came and took more photos of her. She passed away on September 17, 2025.
