(Minghui.org) Mr. Di Jianchao’s family was notified on January 7, 2026, that he had been hospitalized after a six-day hunger strike. He is being detained for refusing to give up his faith in Falun Gong. Detention center officials did not tell his family in which hospital he was being treated and denied their request to have him released on bail. Mr. Di, 61, of Kunming City, Yunnan Province, remains in the hospital.
Arrest
About 18 plainclothes officers and two SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team officers broke into Mr. Di’s home (which is also his business office) at around 10 p.m. on July 15, 2025.
Without revealing their identities or showing their IDs or a search warrant, they confiscated over ten Falun Gong books, two work computers, one printer, one copier, one scanner, and two large wall plaques made with gemstone powder. One plaque read “Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance,” the core principles of Falun Gong, and the other was a Falun emblem. The plaques were so heavy that it took four people to carry just one. His car and cell phone were also seized. No list of confiscated items was issued as required by law. One of Mr. Di’s family members was so terrified, they couldn't stop shaking.
Mr. Di’s family learned later that the officers were from the Guandu District Domestic Security Office and the Zhongzha Police Station in Xishan District. They arrested him while he was distributing Falun Gong informational materials and raided his home just hours later. They also threatened to put him in jail.
Facing Trial
The Guandu District Domestic Security Office submitted Mr. Di’s case to the Wuhua District Procuratorate, which later indicted him.
The Guandu District Detention Center called Mr. Di’s family on January 7, 2026, to say that he had been on a hunger strike for six days and that he had just been rushed to the hospital. The caller refused to name the hospital.
The family went to the Wuhua District Court to seek his release on bail. The court said that it had no jurisdiction over the matter as a trial date had not yet been set. Shortly after, the family was notified that Mr. Di was scheduled to appear in court on January 27. Before long, however, the court contacted them again to say that a court date had not yet been determined.
Prior to this latest incident, Mr. Di was fired from his job at the Kunming City Shipbuilding Company and twice jailed for practicing Falun Gong. He was arrested on November 21, 2004, and punched on the chest and abdomen by two inmates in a detention center. He was later sentenced to four years in the Yunnan Province First Prison.
Mr. Di and his wife, Ms. Luo Jiangqin, 58 and also a Falun Gong practitioner, were arrested at home on February 24, 2014. He was sentenced to four and a half years and served time in the same Yunnan Province First Prison. His wife was given three years in the Yunnan Province Second Women’s Prison. She was forced to sit on a small stool for long periods of time and subjected to other forms of abuse.
