(Minghui.org) A mother and her son in Linghai City, Liaoning Province, were sentenced to six years and fined 15,000 yuan on December 26, 2025, because they practice Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.

Ms. Lu Suping, 69, a former real estate worker, and her son Mr. Jiang Nan, 45, a tutor, were arrested at their shared residence on June 2, 2025. As soon as Mr. Jiang opened the door at 1:40 p.m. that day, three plainclothes officers rushed in and shoved him to the ground. They handcuffed him and yelled “freeze” to his mother and their two guests who practice Falun Gong—Ms. Wang Yanjie, 67, and Ms. Niu Fang, 53.

While one officer kept watch on the three women, another officer began searching the home. More than ten agents soon arrived and joined the raid. They had two bodycams on to record everything.

The police confiscated many valuables, including Falun Gong books, a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, and two cell phones before they took Ms. Lu, Mr. Jiang, Ms. Wang, and Ms. Niu to the Linghai City Detention Center for interrogation.

The four of them were taken to the Jinzhou City Third Hospital for physical examinations the next day. Jinzhou oversees Linghai City. Ms. Wang and Ms. Niu were given ten days of administrative detention at the Jinzhou City Lockup. Ms. Lu was taken to the Jinzhou City Detention Center and her son was taken to the Linghai City Detention Center.

The Linghai City Procuratorate issued formal arrest warrants for Ms. Lu and Mr. Jiang on July 3, 2025. Mr. Jiang hired a lawyer but the lawyer was threatened by prosecutor Li Feng for daring to represent a Falun Gong practitioner. It is unclear whether Ms. Lu had a lawyer.

The police submitted the case against Ms. Lu and Mr. Jiang to the procuratorate on September 2, 2025, and they were indicted at an unknown time.

The Linghai City Court held a hearing of the case on December 22, 2025, without notifying Mr. Jiang’s family. He was not told of the trial until that morning. It is unclear whether his mother was given advance notice of the trial.

Mr. Jiang testified in his own defense but was repeatedly interrupted by presiding judge Du Wenfang. He was thus unable to complete his defense statement. The hearing ended in about one hour, and Du sentenced Mr. Jiang and his mother four days later.

Prior to their latest persecution, the mother and son were previously sentenced to 3.5 and 3 years, respectively, in 2013, following their arrests on December 8, 2012. Ms. Lu served time at the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison and her son at the Jinzhou City Prison and the Shenyang City First Prison.

Ms. Lu, who credits Falun Gong for restoring her health and enabling her to get along with her mother-in-law, was previously arrested on January 9, 2002, and beaten by seven male officers. She rolled on the ground in pain. Her face was deformed due to the beating and her eyes were extremely swollen. She was later forced to pay 5,000 yuan in exchange for her release. She did not get the money back until 2005.
