(Minghui.org) A woman in Dandong City, Liaoning Province, completed a three-year prison term on October 4, 2025, for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Upon returning home, Ms. Pan Jing recounted the torture she suffered while in custody.
After being sentenced to three years in November 2022, Ms. Pan went on a huger strike in the Dandong City Detention Center to protest the wrongful conviction while awaiting to be transferred to prison. Director Chen Yunying instigated inmates to write words slandering the founder of Falun Gong on the soles of her shoes. She also directed other inmates hit and kick her while she was using the toilet.
Vice director Qu Tong instructed seven inmates to hold Ms. Pan down to force-feed her. One person pinched her nose and another shoved the neck of a bottomless plastic bottle into her mouth. They then used a large syringe to inject corn paste into the bottle opening. When she refused to swallow, an inmate kneed her in the stomach. She couldn’t breathe and felt she was about to suffocate. She shouted, “Master Li [the founder of Falun Gong], help me!” The inmates immediately let go of her. They later force-fed her two more times.
A few days later, the detention center doctor directed two male inmates to force-feed her by inserting a tube into her nose down to her stomach. She remained on the hunger strike for over two months until she was admitted to the Liaoning Province Women’s Prison on February 21, 2023.
Ms. Pan faced more abuse in prison. Division 12 guards arranged inmates Sun Xiaohong and He Dan to monitor her around the clock. They followed her everywhere and ordered her to watch videos slandering Falun Gong. She refused to comply, so they turned the volume to the maximum. They also did not let her bathe or use the restroom. When she soiled her pants, they ordered her to eat her own excrement. When she refused to, they smeared the feces on her face mask. A kindhearted inmate later gave her a clean mask.
For four days, Sun and He forced Ms. Pan to stand and didn’t let her sleep. Her lower legs were so swollen that they were as thick as her thighs. Her feet swelled so much that they could no longer fit into her shoes. When another inmate took her blood pressure, there was no readings. Only then did the guards tell Sun and He to stop abusing her.
Ms. Pan was moved to the prison hospital division, which was mainly used to house inmates with mental illnesses. She was assigned to team one on the third floor and made to stay in the same cell as felons who were serving life sentences or were on death row with probation.
Ms. Pan held firm to her faith, so the guards instructed inmates Liu Yan and Zhong Minghe to monitor her. They ordered her to read materials slandering Falun Gong, but she refused to. They berated her with foul language.
At first, Liu and Zhong forced Ms. Pan to either stand or squat for long hours. They then forced her to sit on a small plastic stool from morning to 9 p.m., except for meal times and restroom breaks. They put a slip of paper with messages defaming Falun Gong and its founder on the stool before making her sit on it. When they were not paying attention, Ms. Pan managed to remove the words from the paper.
Liu and Zhong claimed that the prison did not allow inmates to be beaten, but they dragged Ms. Pan to a storage room and did just that. She yelled for help, but no guards showed up.
One evening, several inmates barged into to Ms. Pan’s cell and snatched her winter clothes and thermal undergarment. It was freezing cold that night. Liu and Zhong used boiling water to thaw the ice on the window. It took them a long time to melt the ice and open the window. They forced Ms. Pan to sit facing the window with only a thin layer of clothes, while they themselves, in thick winter coats, sat in a spot with no draft. They taunted her, “We’ll see how long you can last [without submitting to them and renouncing her faith]. It’ll be even colder the next few days.”
Ms. Pan remained firm in her faith. Liu and Zhong caught a cold and some inmates commented it was karma. Yet Liu and Zhong kept abusing Ms. Pan. One day when she was not looking, they poured cold water down her collar. They threatened to give her psychiatric drugs if she still refused to renounce her faith.
Guard Li Shanshan did not let Ms. Pan use the restroom because she had not “admitted her guilt.” She had to relieve herself on the floor.
Ms. Pan later stopped eating to avoid bowel movements. She still had to wet her pants. Days later, Li said to allow her to two restroom breaks every 24 hours.
On a visitation day, Ms. Pan told her family about her abuse. They warned Li that they would sue her for depriving their Ms. Pan of her basic human rights. Li agreed to allow her to use the restroom as needed, but that did not happen until one week later. Liu and Zhong, though, never again threatened to give her psychiatric drugs.
Because Ms. Pan held firm to her faith, the guards did not allow other inmates to use the activity room, where the brainwashing sessions targeting her were usually held. Some inmates blamed her for making their life hard.
One day Li instructed Liu and Zhong to play a video slandering Falun Gong. Ms. Pan went on a hunger strike when they refused to stop it. Li instructed the two inmates and a third one named Zhou Lili to hold her down in the guards’ office. One of the inmates grabbed her hair, a second one pinched her face, and the third one pinched her nose to spoon-feed her. Only when she almost suffocated and screamed for help did they stop
Another time, Li instructed Liu and Zhong to force-feed Ms. Pan milk power mixed with urine.
Shen, a vice president of the prison hospital, talked Ms. Pan many times and warned her that her continued hunger strike would force him to “take action.”
On her scheduled day of release, October 4, 2025, as she was walking to the prison gate, a guard asked her what her “crime” was. She said she did not commit any crime. Another guard urged her to admit guilt so she could go home to see her family. She refused to comply. This went on for more than an hour before they let her go.
