(Minghui.org) A 73-year-old woman in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province, has been put in criminal detention because she practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.

Ms. Liu Yuqin was arrested on August 16, 2026, by officers from the Baogong Police Station. They gave her an unknown duration of administrative detention but didn’t enforce it. She was released hours later. They continued to monitor her daily activities and arrested her again on September 16. Her home was ransacked, and she has been in criminal detention at the Shenyang City First Detention Center since then.

Ms. Liu took up Falun Gong in October 1998. She lives by the principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, Forbearance, and her many ailments, including heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis, soon disappeared.

After the persecution began in 1999, Ms. Liu held firm to her faith and she has been repeatedly targeted.

A group of officers from the Lingkong Police Station broke into Ms. Liu’s home on the evening of April 29, 2002. They confiscated her Falun Gong books and a tape recorder. They took her to the police station for interrogation, and questioned her about other local practitioners.

The officers tied Ms. Liu to a chair. Five strong men took turns slapping her face and burning her fingers with cigarette butts. When she refused to answer their questions, they held her legs up, and one officer rolled a six-inch wide steel pipe against her shinbones. He also held up the pipe and smashed it against her thigh. Her thigh had a deep indentation that took years to recover and the scars on her lower legs are still visible today.

The officers then questioned Ms. Liu as to how many copies of Falun Gong flyers she distributed. They forced her to admit to higher and higher numbers by increasing the intensity of her torture, until the number reached over 100 copies, which was enough to sentence her to a two-year labor camp term.

The police handcuffed Ms. Liu behind her back, pressed her against the ground, and then pulled her head, neck, and arms up. Her arms were severely injured and she was unable to do heavy labor for years.

While beating Ms. Liu, officer Han Yu shouted, “Our Lingkong Police Station is the leading agency across the country in persecuting Falun Gong! I don’t believe we can’t straighten you out!” He also pointed a gun at Ms. Liu’s forehead and threatened to kill her.

The police later revealed that they received a 3,000 yuan reward for each Falun Gong practitioner they arrested.

After one night of torture, Ms. Liu’s arms were severely swollen and her legs were in so much pain that she couldn’t walk. She was taken to a lockup for 15 days and then transferred to the labor camp.

While serving the two-year term, Ms. Liu was forced to work up to 17 hours every day. Her fingers became deformed and they were extremely painful when she tried to straighten or bend them.
