(Minghui.org) A 64-year-old woman in Tonghua City, Jilin Province, has been subjected to various forms of abuse since she was admitted to the Jilin Province Women’s Prison in April 2021, to serve a seven-year term for her faith in Falun Gong.
Ms. Cao Shulian was arrested on July 2, 2020, and wrongly convicted on December 8 that year. The Tonghua City Intermediate Court rejected her appeal and she was admitted to prison on April 29, 2021.
Ms. Cao held firm to her faith in the prison and told the inmates the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong is illegal. The prison guards tortured her in retaliation. In December 2025, she talked to people about Falun Gong again at the prison workshop. The guards re-assigned her to the Eighth Division as punishment.
The Eighth Division, also unknown as the education transformation division, is tasked with forcing jailed Falun Gong practitioners renounce their faith using all means possible. The torture methods include beatings, sitting on a small stool which has a bumpy surface from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m., verbal abuse, pepper spray, solitary confinement, sleep deprivation, restricted food intake, limited restroom use, and exposure to the elements (the windows are kept open in the winter and are closed in the summer).
After the long-term sitting torture, many practitioners’ buttocks festered and their feet became extremely swollen. Some practitioners’ bones were exposed and they were in excruciating pain. Many also developed high blood pressure and heart diseases as a result of the sitting torture and other abuses mentioned above.
While details of Ms. Cao’s torture in Division 8 remain to be investigated, she is very likely subjected to the same kind of human rights violations that other practitioners are subjected to.
Past Persecution
Ms. Cao took up Falun Gong in late 2011, during the ongoing persecution. She soon recovered from her decades-long migraine heacaches, neurasthenia, heart disease, slipped disc, and chronic insomnia. Having benefited tremendously from the practice, she felt compelled to expose the communist regime for persecuting law-abiding Falun Gong practitioners.
Ms. Cao was detained for 15 days after she was arrested on December 17, 2014. The police seized her again on November 25, 2015, and she was sentenced to three years with five years probation on April 12, 2016. She was released in December 2016 but faced long-term surveillance and harassment afterwards.
