A woman in Shulan City, Jilin Province, died on March 2, 2026, after enduring decades of persecution for her faith in Falun Gong. Ms. Guo Xiuqing was in her 70s.
Ms. Guo previously suffered from various diseases, including cirrhosis, cholecystitis (inflammation of the gallbladder), pancreatitis, angina pectoris (chest pain due to insufficient blood and oxygen supply to heart), and migraines. She also became irritable, and even loud talking by her family would set her off. After she took up Falun Gong on May 8, 1998, she made a miraculous recovery. Both she and her family had smiles on their faces, and laughter was again heard in their house.
After the Chinese Communist Party launched a nationwide campaign against Falun Gong in July 1999, Ms. Guo held firm to her faith and was repeatedly arrested.
Twice Arrested for Going to Beijing to Appeal for Falun Gong
Ms. Guo went to Beijing to appeal for the right to practice Falun Gong in October 1999. After she returned to Shulan, her local Huancheng Street Committee Office found out about her trip and started to harass her at home. They ordered her to write statements to “break free from Falun Gong,” which she refused.
Ms. Guo set out for Beijing again in 2000 but was shadowed by a plainclothes officer as soon as she boarded the train. He dragged her off the train and turned her over to the Nancheng Police Station. The police there searched her and handed her over to the Huancheng Police Station. She was then taken to the Nanshan Lockup to serve 15-days of administrative detention. After the term expired, she was forced to pay 160 yuan for food expenses and taken to the Huancheng Street Committee Office, where she was detained for another week before being released.
Two Forced Labor Terms
Ms. Guo was arrested on her way home on November 15, 2005, by Huancheng Police Station officers. They searched her and also subjected her to verbal abuse and beatings. She was taken to the Shulan City Domestic Security Office for interrogation. The police force-fed her mustard oil and restrained her in a tiger bench torture device. After nearly 20 hours of torture, she was moved to the Nanshan Detention Center. Not long after, she was given one year of forced labor.
On November 16, 2005, the day after her arrest, the police raided her home and confiscated a music player, a portrait of Falun Gong’s founder, two Falun Gong exercise music tapes, and two audio tapes of Falun Gong teachings.
Chief Sun from the Huancheng Police Station arrested Ms. Guo again on May 29, 2012. They raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and informational materials. They gave her an unknown term of forced labor the next day, but the local detention center declined to admit her after she was found to have extremely high blood pressure. Only then did the police release her.
Even More Persecution Episodes
Ms. Guo was taken to the Shulan Brainwashing Center, located at a resort at the time, on August 7, 2013. It is unclear how long she was detained there.
Ms. Guo and many other local practitioners were harassed at their homes around August 22, 2015, for filing criminal complaints against former Chinese dictator Jiang Zemin for launching the persecution of Falun Gong. The police also attempted to arrest her, but she narrowly escaped.
Three officers from the Huancheng Police Station broke into Ms. Guo’s home on April 27, 2017, and confiscated her Falun Gong books and informational materials. They took her to the police station where she was held until around 6 p.m. that day. The same police station arrested her again on October 15, 2017, and detained her for several hours.
The Jilin City Domestic Security Office, the Shulan City Domestic Security Office, and their subordinate police stations conducted a mass arrest of local Falun Gong practitioners on September 10, 2019. Ms. Guo was not home, but the police confiscated her Falun Gong books.
The police showed up at Ms. Guo’s home three times in May 2021. She was not in, so they arrested her husband, who did not practice Falun Gong.
Seven officers from the Huancheng Police Station, including deputy chief Chen Rao (+86-13944297779) and Ji Guofeng, arrested Ms. Guo at home on February 18, 2022. She was released later that day.
Officers from the Tiedong Police Station broke into Ms. Guo’s home on the afternoon of May 7, 2022, and seized her husband. She avoided the arrest because she was not home at the time. Her husband was held until the next morning.
An officer from the Nancheng Police Station came to take photos of Ms. Guo against her will on December 29, 2025. She was already bedridden at the time. The harassments worsened her condition. She died on March 2, 2026.
