(Minghui.org) Mr. Luo Wenbin from Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province has served four jail terms totaling 16.5 years since he was 26, simply for refusing to renounce his faith, Falun Gong.
When Mr. Luo, born in July 1975, was most recently released in March 2026 after completing a four-year term, he was emaciated, extremely weak, and mentally unstable.
Mr. Luo was last arrested in March 2022, not long after he finished his third prison term in September 2021 for practicing Falun Gong. The authorities didn’t notify his family of his whereabouts or case status. They only found out in August 2023 that he had been admitted to the Nanchang City Prison to serve a four-year term.
According to an insider, as of June 2025, Mr. Luo had been placed in solitary confinement five times, each time for several months, because he held firm to his faith and refused to do forced labor. The solitary confinement is in a four-square-meter (about 40 sq. ft.) room with no windows. During the strict management, he could only use water from the toilet bowl for drinking and washing.
The insider also revealed that between March and mid-April 2024, the prison guards instructed inmates to restrain Mr. Luo in a metal chair (see image below) and taped headphones to his ears, forcing him to listen to recordings slandering Falun Gong. This daily brainwashing session ran from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. without any breaks.

Mr. Luo was also given very little food, and he has become extremely thin and weak. He needs to wear heavy jackets even in the hot summer because he was always cold. He also struggled with dangerously high blood pressure.
Mr. Luo used to rely on his elderly parents for care when he was released from previous prison terms, but his mother passed away in 2021 after taking a fall, and his father can no longer care for him. He struggles to live on his own, especially now that he is incapacitated. Some friends have provided him with temporary financial support. They worry about how he will survive in the long term.
Past Persecution
Mr. Luo was a teacher at the Luojia Town First Middle School in Qingshanhu District, Nanchang City. He took up Falun Gong in late 1998 and soon recovered from a severe stomach problem. He also became a more conscientious and caring teacher. He was well-regarded by his students and colleagues, but was repeatedly targeted after the persecution began one year later.
7-Year Prison Sentence in 2001 at the Age of 26
Mr. Luo was arrested in October 2000 for distributing Falun Gong flyers and later sentenced to seven years on November 5, 2001.
The guards at the Yuzhang Prison subjected Mr. Luo to various forms of torture, including savage beatings, cuffing his hands behind his back and then hanging him up by the cuffs, forcing him to stand facing a wall or bend his body for long periods of time, force-feeding, having him memorize prison rules and do military drills, and forcing him to work long hours without pay. One time, the guards held him down on the ground and whipped him in the head with several metal hangers twisted into multi-strand wires. Mr. Luo became dazed and incoherent on top of suffering physical injuries.
4.5-Year Prison Sentence in 2009 at the Age of 34
Mr. Luo was arrested again on September 17, 2009, for putting up Falun Gong posters. He was later sentenced to four and a half years and served time at the Nanchang Prison, where he was forced to do hard labor without pay and also brutally tortured.
When Mr. Luo was released in March 2014, he was incapacitated and could no longer work. His parents had to take him in. He suffered constant headaches, convulsions, tremors, and sometimes shouted uncontrollably. He and his family suspected that the prison guards had added psychotropic drugs to his food, a form of abuse used against many incarcerated Falun Gong practitioners.
One-Year Sentence Following Arrest in 2020 at the Age of 45
Mr. Luo gradually recovered through studying Falun Gong teachings and doing Falun Gong exercises. He resumed his efforts to raise awareness of the persecution, only to be arrested again around September 1, 2020, for distributing Falun Gong informational materials. He was secretly sentenced to one year in prison without a hearing and served his term at the Nanchang County Detention Center.
During the 2021 Chinese New Year, Mr. Luo’s mother passed away. His father applied to the detention center to allow him to attend his mother’s funeral, but the request was denied.
Mr. Luo was released in September 2021, but was arrested again shortly after and given a fourth prison term.
