(Minghui.org) A 75-year-old Chongqing woman is facing indictment for her faith in Falun Gong, a mind-body practice that has been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party since July 1999.
Ms. Zou Hualan was arrested at a bus station at around 10 a.m. on March 6, 2026, after local community vice secretary Yang Guoqiang reported her for talking to him about Falun Gong. Officers from the Gelan Town Police Station searched her but did not find any Falun Gong informational materials. They reported the case to the Changshou District Domestic Security Office.
The latter police agency raided Ms. Zou’s home at 1 a.m. on March 7, 2026. They did not find Falun Gong materials. To prosecute her, they pored over surveillance footage and identified three clips showing Ms. Zhou talking to people. They claimed that she was promoting Falun Gong and submitted her case to the Changshou District Procuratorate.
The procuratorate issued a formal arrest warrant for Ms. Zou on March 18, 2026, and likely has transferred the case to the Liangjiang New District Procuratorate, one of the local procuratorates designated to handle Falun Gong cases.
Several lawyers expressed their willingness to represent Ms. Zou when approached by her family. Those not hired encouraged her family to reach out if they ran into any legal questions. One of them called her sons to express his admiration for Ms. Zou because she upheld her faith and did nothing illegal.
The lawyer eventually hired to represent Ms. Zou met with her at the local detention center. He told her family that she had a smile on her face and remained calm during the nearly two-hour visit.
Prior to her latest persecution episode, Ms. Zhou, a retired employee of the Changshou Agricultural Machinery Company, was incarcerated for nearly 11 years. She served three forced labor terms totaling five years and two months (July 1999 – March 2001; November 2001 – November 2003; and August 2006 – February 2008), as well as two prison terms totaling five years (July 2017 – July 2019; and November 2019 – November 2022). Additionally, she was held at a local detention center from September 2012 to May 2013.
Kindness Moved Family
When Ms. Zou finished her second prison term in November 2022, her local street committee and police station picked her up. After processing some paperwork, they drove her home. Her daughter-in-law greeted her at the door and cried upon seeing how emaciated she had become after three years in prison.
A street committee staffer was moved by the scene and wondered how Ms. Zou’s daughter-in-law was so affectionate towards her since the communist regime’s propaganda had depicted Falun Gong practitioners as being cold and distant from their own families. She responded that Falun Gong taught people to be good. She does not have any biological children, but treated her two stepsons as her own. After they grew up and got married, she treated their wives as if they were her own daughters. Her daughters-in-law, in turn, treated her as if she were their own mother.
Ms. Zou’s pension was cut to just a bit over 700 yuan per month after she was sentenced to prison. She appealed, and the benefits were later increased to 3,000 yuan per month. While she was getting only 700 yuan per month, her younger sister, who was addicted to gambling and once lost a house to a gambling debt, emptied her bank account using connections with a friend who worked at the bank. Her two stepsons and daughters-in-law urged her to disown her sister. She did not do so and still cared about her sister.
Fractures Healed in One Month
In November 2025, Ms. Zou went to visit a friend who suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis. During their conversation, the bedridden friend needed to use the bathroom. Ms. Zou tried to help her out of bed, only to tumble to the ground herself.
Ms. Zou went to the hospital the next day and was diagnosed with multiple fractures in her lower back and a dislocated lumbar vertebra. The doctor prescribed bed rest and suggested that she use a wheelchair.
Ms. Zou did the Falun Gong exercises and mostly recovered in just one week. She returned to the hospital in one month for a follow-up visit. Her doctor was shocked that her fractures had completely healed.
