(Minghui.org) A man in Qianguo County, Jilin Province, is appealing a 7.5-year illegal sentence. He was targeted because he practices Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Mr. Leng Zhenhui was arrested on October 10, 2025, after the police flagged him for mentioning Falun Gong while chatting with someone on WeChat (a social media platform). They located him through his cell phone and seized him in Changtuozi Village. Several villagers tried to stop the police but were unsuccessful. His home was also ransacked.
Mr. Leng was held at the Guaibodian Detention Center. He was indicted by the Qianguo County Procuratorate in January 2026 and tried by the Qianguo County Court on February 5, 2026. The judge sentenced him to 7.5 years at an unknown time. He appealed the verdict.
According to insiders, WeChat is imposing comprehensive automated censorship of, and conducting content analysis of both public and private messages. Any message, image, or video that contains “sensitive” or “censored” information is tracked. As every WeChat account is linked to the user’s cell phone number or ID, the police can accurately locate the user and retrieve their account information. The authorities also ordered internet service providers to keep their customers’ online activities for at least six months.
Past Persecution
Mr. Leng took up Falun Gong in 1998. After the persecution started in July 1999, he has been repeatedly targeted. In addition to his latest prison term, he also served two labor camp terms and was twice taken to a brainwashing center.
First Forced Labor Camp Term
Mr. Leng was arrested by Ji Wanshan, the chief of Dashan Police Station, on November 25, 2000, for distributing Falun Gong materials. They cuffed him to a heat radiator and beat him. After nearly one month of detention, he was given one year at the Jiutai Forced Labor Camp. The guards forced him to work without pay. They also beat him and forced him to stand. He fell into serious condition due to the torture and was released ahead of time.
Forced to Live Away from Home
Four officers from the Songyuan City Domestic Security Office and the Taohaotai Police Station broke into Mr. Leng’s home on June 5, 2007, and confiscated his Falun Gong books and informational materials. They ordered him to go with them. He refused. They didn’t insist but returned on June 19, attempting to arrest him. He was not home, and the police arrested him neighbor by mistake.
After that, the police frequented Mr. Leng’s home to look for him. To avoid being arrested, he was forced to live away from home for months.
Second Forced Labor Camp Term
Mr. Leng was seized at home on the evening of March 3, 2008, by Xu Gang, Ding Dayi, and Liu Yang, of the Taohaotai Police Station, as well as officers of the Songyuan City Police Department. His wife went to the detention center twice to visit him, but was denied both times. Both of his parents were in poor health, and his son was still in high school. Due to the persecution, he was unable to work on the family’s farm, which caused his family tremendous financial difficulty.
After he was detained for more than 50 days, Mr. Leng was given one year and nine months at the Jiutai Forced Labor Camp. He and other detained Falun Gong practitioners were forced to make cement bricks. Each of them had to process 65 tons of cement every day.
Two Brainwashing Center Detentions
Mr. Leng was arrested by two officers from the Taohaotai Police Station and the Changtuozi Village security director on September 15, 2011. He was held at the Changlong Township Brainwashing Center for four days.
Mr. Leng was arrested again in the fall of 2012, by officer Liu of the Taohaotai Police Station. He was first taken to the Songyuan City Police Department and then transferred to a brainwashing center in Changchun City, the capital of Jilin. He was released 15 days days later.
Additional Attempts to Arrest Mr. Leng
The director of the Qianguo County Domestic Security Office went to the Changtuozi Village multiple times in August 2023, attempting to arrest Mr. Leng, but didn’t succeed.
Officers from the Zhenlai County Police Department also tried to arrest Mr. Leng on July 10, 2024. He wasn’t home. The police returned a few days later. He still was not there. They searched his corn field but they didn’t find him.
