(Minghui.org) Editor’s Note: The Nanchang Prison, located in Jiangxi Province, is one of the main prisons for incarcerating male Falun Gong (Falun Dafa) practitioners in the province. According to reports by Minghui.org, hundreds of Falun Gong practitioners were subjected to violent beatings, shocked with electric batons, forced to do hard labor, deprived of sleep, and abused while held at the prison.
Practitioners who died in custody include Mr. Lan Hu, Mr. Yang Pingsheng, Mr. Luo Laiyang, Mr. Liu Leima, and Mr. Zhou Chuming.
Below is a personal account from a practitioner who was held in the prison during the pandemic while serving a five-year term. To protect his identity, his name has been omitted.
In January 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was sent to the Nanchang Prison and held in the admission group for brainwashing. For a month, I was forced to study politics, memorize the prison rules, march in military style, and watch videos that slandered Falun Gong. Afterward, I was transferred to the Team One section of the prison.
Falun Gong Practitioners Tortured in Team One
Team One contains a garment factory. Other practitioners detained at the same time as me included Mr. Pan Shuicai, Mr. Liu Qiusheng, and Mr. Yang Dayun.
Wang Xiang, a young captain and a graduate of the police academy, was in charge of persecuting Falun Gong practitioners. He forbade me from speaking with anyone and arranged for eight inmates to monitor and torture me around the clock. Wang also frequently tortured me. One night, he handcuffed my hands behind my back and forced me to kneel before him. He then slapped me in the face and pinched me with his fingers, leaving bruises on my arms and thighs. The bruises took two months to heal. When I pointed out that the physical assault was illegal, he responded, “It’s not illegal. It’s just against the rules.” He often tormented Mr. Yang, forcing him to stand facing the wall for several days until his legs swelled.
Cui Jun, a prison instructor, harbored intense hatred for Falun Gong and brutally tortured practitioners. When I entered the workshop on the first day, he called me into a dark room, forced me to kneel, and beat me. He forced me to remain kneeling whenever I fell over from the beating.
I asked, “I just got here and don’t even know you. Why are you beating me?” He said, “Just because you are Falun Gong.”
While I was making clothes on the sewing machine, he would suddenly call me over and force me to squat on one leg for an hour without switching legs. Every night, after the rest of the inmates had gone to sleep, he made me watch videos that slandered Falun Gong. He forced me to memorize every word. I would be abused if I couldn’t repeat the content.
Solitary Confinement
Liu Jianxin was a very strict team leader. One time after lunch, I forgot to put on my mask for about a minute, and he forced me to attend a brainwashing class for an additional two months.
The so-called study class was an area of the prison where inmates had to work during the day and face the wall at night. They also had to copy the prison rules and were monitored 24 hours a day.
Liu was sent to Xinjiang and Tibet in 2022 to learn the torture methods used on the Uyghurs and Tibetan lamas. After returning in 2023, he used those methods on us. The torture left Mr. Pan Shuicai emaciated and he needed to stay in the prison hospital for a long time.
Persecution by the Captains
Captain Lei Ziqiang often abused Falun Gong practitioners. Once, because I went to the restroom in the workshop without a “pass,” I was sent to the brainwashing class for two months. Later, I was again sent to the brainwashing class for two months because I didn’t finish the assigned work quota.
Li Xiaoliang, a deputy captain, was promoted to instructor for his ability to mistreat Falun Gong practitioners. He often forced Mr. Yang and me to write statements renouncing our faith. He also hit my head with heavy books, forced me to sit on a small stool, and to squat on one leg. One night, he forced me to squat while writing a “transformation” report.
Deprived of Visitation Rights
Hu Qiang, a deputy captain in charge of finance, prohibited me from contacting my family for several years. I was not allowed to make phone calls or write letters. My family knew nothing about my situation. My older brother searched everywhere for me, and when he came to the prison, he was not allowed to visit me. He was so saddened that he fell ill and was hospitalized. He contracted COVID-19 in the hospital and passed away. I only learned what had happened after I was released.
Denied Medical Treatment
I accidentally jabbed my index finger on the sewing machine while rushing to do the work. The needle broke off inside my flesh, and the bleeding wouldn’t stop. I reported it to an instructor and hoped to go to the clinic to have the needle removed. The instructor ignored my situation and accused me of “inflicting self-harm.” I had no choice but to wrap my injury in tissues and continue working. Many days later, the needle came out by itself.
Pepper-Spray and Intense Labor
Deputy captain Xie Xiaohua often forced me to squat on one leg. He also hit my head with heavy books and made me write “transformation” reports.
Qiu Ning, a deputy captain and graduate of the provincial medical college who chose to become a prison guard, was very active in persecuting Falun Gong. He threatened me and forced me to write reports. Once, I was called into a room where he beat me and pepper-sprayed my face.
The workload in Team One was extremely heavy and even more severe than the mistreatment I endured in Yuzhang Prison. I was finally released after serving the five-year term.
After returning home, I learned that several elderly family members had passed away during the pandemic. My employer fired me and suspended my social security and medical insurance. At 60 years old, I can’t find a job, yet the police and the neighborhood committee continue to harass me and monitor my daily life.
