(Minghui.org) A 94-year-old incapacitated man has been subjected to ongoing abuse while serving a three-year term for his faith in Falun Gong.
The ordeal of Mr. Xu Shuju, a resident in Jixi City, Heilongjiang Province, began on August 30, 2017, when both he and his late wife, Ms. Wang Chuanyun, were arrested for hanging up banners with information about the Chinese Communist Party’s persecution of Falun Gong. Even though the couple was released on bail hours later, they were each sentenced to three years and were fined 10,000 yuan in early September 2021.
The couple went into hiding after they were sentenced to avoid being imprisoned. The police found them and kept harassing them. Ms. Wang passed away on September 16, 2025, succumbing to mental distress. She was around 86.
Mr. Xu’s health continued to deteriorate. He became bedridden and incontinent, yet eight officers carried him away on a gurney on April 20, 2026, and took him to the Jidong County Hospital. The eight officers watched him around the clock in pairs on four-hour shifts. They also installed a surveillance camera in his ward.
Mr. Xu was admitted to the Jixi City Prison in an ambulance three days later on April 23, 2026. He was transferred to the Tailai Prison on June 30, and held at the infirmary division.
When Mr. Xu’s family visited him on July 7, he told them, “That is absolutely brutal.” He said that he wasn’t allowed to talk to the other inmates in his cell, and that the food was extremely poor. He asked his family to deposit money so he could buy extra food. The visitation room was on the fourth floor. He was so weak that he had to stop several times before he could make it to upstairs.
